Pvt. John W. Morgan born 03 March 1828 Bledsoe co., TN. died 28 Feb 1914 Rhea 

Co., TN. Buried: Mount Vernon Church Cemetery. Son of George Washington "Wash" 

Morgan (1 of the original Morgan brothers that settled in Rhea Co. TN. ca. 1805)

and Susannah Cline. Grandson of (Revolutionary War Soldier) Daniel Morgan and 

Mary Arthur-Morgan. John W. Morgan married Mary Ann Jordan ca. 1850 Rhea Co., 

TN. She was born 26 Dec 1829 Cherokee Co., GA. died 04 Jul 1902 Hamilton Co., 

TN. Buried: Mount Vernon Church Cemetery. Daughter of William Asahel Jordan and 

Grizzaly "Grace" "Ally" Greer. (NOTE: Date of Death is wrong on the photo for 

Mary Ann Jordan-Morgan) Pvt. John W. Morgan, Co., "F" 5th TN Inf USA was in the 

same Unit and Compamy as his brother Francis M. Morgan born 1836 Rhea Co., TN. 

and who was killed 10 May 1863 in the Battle of Chattanooga, TN. And, his 

brother-in-law Robert Ozias "Icey" Jordan born Jane 1824 Habersham Co., GA. 

died 13 Sept 1907 Graysville, Rhea Co., TN.  Great Grandaughter Ruth W. Jordan-

Smith has in her posession, an old wooden box filled with several personal 

items belonging to John W. Morgan as well as his Civil War Discharge Document 

and GRAND ARMY BADGE card and envelope he received for the capture of a 

Confederate cannon. John's eyes were injured during the War and afterwards was 

called "Sleepy John"
