Hale FRED G. HAGGARD. In the practice of law at Rockwood since 1901, Fred G. HAGGARD is a successful lawyer, and one of the local leaders in politics. He began doing for himself at the age of sixteen, gained most of his education by hard study while earning a living and is the kind of citizen whose influence counts for good in any community. Mr. HAGGARD was born in Roane county, Tennessee, November 1, 1878, being a son of J.H. [John Henry] and Nancy K. (KINDRICK) HAGGARD, both of whom were natives of Roane county. Grandfather R.G. HAGGARD was a native of North Carolina, whence he came to Tennessee in early days, and spent all hnis life on a farm. He was well-to-do, owned slaves before the war, and played a substantial role in his community. The Haggard family originally came from Ireland. The maternal grandfather, John KINDRICK, was born in Roane county, his people having settled here from Virginia, among the pioneers. The Kindricks are of German descent. Both J.H. and Nancy K. HAGGARD, the parents, were educated in the common schools of Roane county, and the father was first a farmer and then a miller in the lumber business. They were the parents of five children, of whom Fred was second, the others being as follows: H.H., in the manufacturing business at Cookeville; Jerry, cashier of the Citizens Bank at Albuquerque, New Mexico; R.P. Haggard, associated with the Brown Mining Company at Rockwood; Nancy, at home. The mother is a member of the Christian church, and the father was a Mason and Republican in politics. Fred G. Haggard on leaving the Rockwood high school entered the American Temperate [sic] University at Harrmain, and, studied law under T.A. Wright, now of Knoxville. He was admitted to the bar in 1901, and began practice with Mr. WRIGHT in Rockwood, and has since built up a general practice of the law, in Roane county. In 1900 Mr. HAGGARD married Katherine W. CROWDER, daughter of H.A. and Alice W. CROWDER of Rockwood, but now residents of Chattanooga. Her father is a traveling salesman. Mrs. HAGGARD has membership in the Christian church. Mr. HAGGARD is affiliated with the Rockwood Lodge of Masons No. 403, and with the Chattanooga Lodge of Elks No. 91. In politics a Republican, he has been active in party affairs, but has never sought office. At the present time he is chairman of the county committee, and for a number of years has served on the Congressional committee, and also as a member of the Second Chancery committee. HAGGARD in the 1880 Roane Co, TN census. His middle name was Gilliland, the surname of his 2d great-grandfather Robert GILLILAND, one of the first settlers in Roane County. Fred's grandfather, Robert Gilliland HAGGARD, is mentioned in Hale as having been born in NC. As far as we know, however, this son of Jane GILLILAND and the Rev Gray HAGGARD was born in Roane County, Tennessee. Rev Gray HAGGARD, however, was born in NC, so it appears that the informant may have conflated some of the information about Fred's two ancestors. Both Fred and Kate are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Rockwood, Roane Co, TN. Their home, a large Victorian, was still standing as of March 2006.
