He served eighteen months in the 5th South Carolina Regiment. He had a brother who was a major in the regiment. He was born January 1, 1763, in Virginia. He enlisted while living in Marlboro County, South Carolina, in 1779 of 1780, and again in 1782. He died in Roane County in 1848 and his widow, Lucretia McNatt, applied for widow's pension. She was then 60 years of age and so born in 1788. She was married to the soldier in March, 1816, in Roane County. Lucretia McNatt was probably John McNatt's second wife as her marriage to him took place when he was about 54 years of age.
