Tennessee, Roane Co., TN . "To Georgia from 4 Sep 1847 to June 1848. Notification to H. Howell Cobb, H Reps". 13 September 1832, Roane Co. TN, September term, declaration of John J. Williams, then age 73, as to service [b c1759. mlj]. Entered service 15 September 1781 in Wilkes Co., NC. Drafted under Capt. Alexander Jordan, marched with said company to Salisbury, NC where was attached to regiment under Col. Malmaday (sic) & Maj. Rowan. Attached to company of artificers under Maj. James Cole Mountflorence. Served whole of this tour for three months as an artificer and was discharged 24 Dec 1781 by Maj. Mountflorence, which "has been worn out a copy of whitch this applicant has preserved". Again entered as substitute for John McHenry in Capt. Gates Company of Militia as an artificer under Maj. Mountflorence, Salisbury, NC for three months and discharged at Salisbury; discharge obtained March 25, 1782, was in no engagement. Knew Gen. Rutherford & Col. Lock who were regular officers. Following this discharge returned to Wilkes Co., NC where he resided 19 years, from thence removed to Jackson County, Tennessee & Overton Counties where he lived for 19 years, from there to McMinn Tenn where he lived 1 year and from thence Bledsoe & Rhea & Roane Countys ever since and now resides in Roane Co. s/s John J. Williams Affidavits of character by James [X] Robertson and s/s Willis Crowe 20 Jan 1848, Lumpkin Co., GA, before J.H. Worley, J.P., statement of John J. Williams that he is same John J. Williams who belonged to Company commanded by Capt. William Sloan, Regt commanded by Col. Francis Lock, Service of the U.S. That he was on pension roll of the State of Tennessee where recently he removed to the State of Georgia because his children all had, and are now living in the State of Georgia and he wishes to live with them as he was too old and infirm to live well by himself. 20 Jan 1848, J. H. Worley, J.P. affirms he is well acquainted with Hiram Williams, who gave affidavit. 16 January 1860, Campbell County, Tenn, Nancy Williams, aged about 75 years [b abt 1785. mlj], makes affidavit in order to obtain benefits of provision made by act of Congress passed 3 Feb 1853 granting pensions to widows of Revolutionary War soldiers that John J. Williams was an artificer and drew pension at Knoxville, Tenn, of $96.00 per year. Nancy [X] Williams 19 January 1860: Affidavits of John McGee and David Overton, residents of Campbell County, Tennessee, depose "they always heard it said and it is generally believed by the community that John J. Williams decd was a revolutionary soldier and Nancy Williams was by him always treated and is by the witnesses believed to be the widow of the said Revolutionary Soldier, died October 4th 1849. John [X] McGee, David [X] Overton 31 March [no year] Nancy Williams gives affidavit that she was married to John J. Williams on 3 June 1815 in Fentress Co., TN by Stroder Frogg, Esq, now dead, that she had the marriage "lines" but they cannot be found, that county records burned. Stated their marriage had been recorded in the family bible in her husband's hand. Stated her said husband died 6 October 1849, that she was not married to him prior to 2 January 1800; that her husband did live part of his time in Roane County, Tenn and that he moved to the State of Georgia in 1847 and died there, and that she has ever since resided in Anderson or Campbell County, Tenn. Nancy [X] Williams Silas L. Arthur, JP stated Nancy Williams was the person she represented herself to be. Her claim was not allowed as she failed to furnish proof that she was the widow of the particular John J. Williams who rendered above noted service. 8 July 1911, Mrs. M. L. Blatherwick of Center Point, Texas requested information on Rev. soldiers J. J. Williams of Anderson Co., Tenn "who was an ancestor" and also on Etheldred Williams, ..."both of Revolutionary & War of 1812." July, 1932, C. M. Williams, Jr., Rt 3, Ringgold, GA requested record of John J. Williams "who served in the Revolution in the North Carolina troops". [NOTE: Jackson County, TN created 1801 from Smith Co., and Overton County created 1806 from Jackson County. Thomas J. Williams' pension states he "lived in Jackson and Overton Counties for 19 years", so he may have lived in the same place, in that part of Jackson Co. that became Overton Co., but county lines changed during this period. mlj] ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
