Hale BENJAMIN F. FYKE, M. D. Both of superior family and of superior individual ability is Dr. Benjamin F. Fyke, of Springfield. In his paternal origin he is of German descent, although his first American ancestor came to this country from Wales. His great-grandfather Fyke was a Revolutionary patriot. His grandfather, Nathan Fyke, was a native of North Carolina, whence he came to Robertson county in Tennessee, taking up government land; here he lived and died and here his family was reared. His son, Jeremiah Fyke (1820-1888) became a wealthy and prominent man of the county. He was a slave-owner and was a loyal Democrat but not a politician. He married Miss Beady Sellers, a daughter of Howell Sellers, who was a life-long resident of Robertson county. To Jeremiah Fyke and his wife five children were born. The eldest, Mary A., is Mrs. William B. Scruggs, of Todd county, Kentucky; the second, G. B., is a Robertson county agriculturist; Julina Perry, the third in line, is Mrs. W. H. Perry of Nashville; William D. is a Robertson county farmer; Benjamin F., the youngest, is the special subject of this biographical account. The family of Jeremiah Fyke was connected with the Missionary Baptist church, of which both he and his wife were very devout members. At the parental home in Robertson county, Tennessee, Benjamin Fyke was born on December 10, 1854. The general foundation for his educational structure was laid with materials gained from, the country schools. His professional course was pursued in Vanderbilt University, at Nashville, Tennessee, where he entered the College of Medicine, graduating in 1877. True to his native community, he began his practice of medicine in Robertson county. In 1896 he located in Springfield, where he has since remained, active in the numerous and important duties of his profession. Dr. Fyke has always had a large practice and his varied experience adds much to the value of his diagnoses and treatments. Dr. Fyke has been twice married and has six sons and daughters, all well settled in life. On October 10, 1879, he married Miss Lizzie Wells, who bore him three daughters, but who died in 1886. The daughters are as follows: Miss Nora Fyke; Beady E., now Mrs. Robert Shannon of Springfield; and Lottie A., who is Mrs. William Stark of Springfield. The doctor was married on October 15, 1889, the present Mrs. Fyke being Miss Mary Ann Walker, a daughter of George W. Walker, one of Robertson county's farmers. The children of the Walker-Fyke marriage comprise the following: Will Foster Fyke, now a student in Maryville College; Katie May, who is attending the Springfield high school; and George Elmer Fyke, who is a pupil in the public schools of Springfield. The members of the Fyke family are connected with the Presbyterian church, U. S. A., of Springfield. The doctor is a Democrat in polities. His social interests are very closely woven with those of his profession and his membership in organizations includes his affiliation with the county and state medical associations. He is highly regarded as a citizen and as an exponent of the medical profession.
