Hale JESSE S. JONES. One of the most capable business men in his county is Jesse S. Jones, a farmer and merchant of Baggettsville, where his store has been an important business factor since 1883. A native of the state, he is a thoroughly good southerner. His parents were of Robertson county birth. Tennessee was the chosen state, in early manhood, of his maternal grandfather, as it was of his father's father, James Jones, who was born in Georgia. The latter, a successful farmer and formerly a slave-owner, lived to the age of ninety-six years, in Robertson county. His son, also named James, was born here in 1828; and Elizabeth Baggett, whom he married when they reached the years of maturity, was born in the same county in 1830. Their life together, continuing until her decease in 1897, was lived on a farm near Baggettsville, still occupied by James Jones. She was a member of the Baptist church and he has long been affiliated with Burton lodge 222 of the Free and Accepted Masons. He is a Democrat of decided views and strong interest in civic affairs. James Jones is well known in the county, where he is one of the oldest inhabitants of the community. He and his good wife were the parents of nine children, six of whom survive their mother. The fourth in line was Jesse S. Jones, born on August 14, 1861, in Robertson county. Although his education was limited, the ability of Jesse S. Jones was of a very practical and enterprising order. After spending his first and experimentally vocational period in farming, he opened a store in Baggettsville, which he has since steadily and gradually developed, until its value has reached the figure of $10,000. His stock has constantly increased and his business has been profitable from the start and without interruption of its flourishing condition. In various other lines, Mr. Jones has demonstrated his financial ability. He owns a nourishing farm, of 320 acres, on which he raises tobacco, corn and wheat, also buying and selling mules. All his operations are carried on in a strictly business-like manner. He owns stock in the Bank of Greenbrier and is a director of the same, besides being a stockholder of the Bank of White House. He furthermore owns stock in the Southern Insurance Company at Nashville; in the Independent Snuff Company of the same city; and in the Sprouse Brothers & Company Hardware business at Springfield. The domestic establishment of Mr. Jones is presided over by Sallie Dorris Jones, his wife. She is a daughter of the late Plummer Dorris, who was a well-known and useful citizen of Robertson county. He was both a farmer and a mechanic for many years gave the community important service as a maker of coffins. He was prominent in the Masonic order of his locality. The Dorris-Jones marriage took place on October 13, 1892, and during the succeeding years six children have been born in this home. The eldest, Ruby, is now in college in Nashville; Blonie is also pursuing collegiate courses in the same city; Horace, Joel and Maxie are pupils in the public schools; and little Annie L. is still in the years of her babyhood. The church connection of Jesse Jones and his family is that of the Baptist organization. He is interested in secret society activities, including those of the Free and Accepted Masons, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Greenbrier. He is a Democrat in his political theories and votes consistently with his party allegiance. Mr. Jones is to be emphatically congratulated on his success, for he ranks exceedingly high among the business men of the region in which he lives. He also has a family of which he may well be proud and is giving each of its members the best education to be had.
