Know all men by these presents that I Mary Griffin do hereby bargain and sell 

to Charles L. Davis in and for the consideration of the sum of six hundred to 

me in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, hath bargained, 

sold and delivered unto the said Charles L. Davis a certain negro woman slave 

by the name of Hannah aged about fifteen years old I _____ for life I do 

warrant and forever defend the said negro to be mine and that I have a right 

to sell the same.  In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal 

this 1st day of February 1839.
