D. Bellah, Rutherford Co., TN to Newton Co., Missouri relatives [From a typewritten copy, with some punctuation added. Notes at the bottom.] Murfreesboro, Tenn Jan. 19th 1847 Dear Cousin John Your kind favour was received but a short time ago on the 12th Tues. I had nearly despaired of getting a letter from you again and had commenced writing to Aunt Nancy and family the day I received yours. I was very much gratified to peruse your interesting communication. Those incidents of Indian history which you have commenced sketching are quite interesting to me. I can assure you and I would be glad you would continue them from time to time, as will suit your convenience. I am sorry to learn that your lady has enjoyed bad health and also that you have not yet been blessed with a little relative for me but such blessings (although they generally come on fast enough) are sometimes rather slow in appearing. You are rather a bad hand to guess when you imagined that you would find me a nursing if you were to step into our house. My dear cousin, I have to inform you that we have had the misfortune of burying two children already in a little over thirteen months. Our first born, a girl, was still born on the 1eth of December 1845. It was born a few days before its time. Our second, a boy, was born on yesterday th 18th Jan. and was also still born. It was born at the proper time. They were both dead a few days before they were born. We have not heard from Cousin James for a long time, I believe not since you left Tenn. If you hear from him please let us know it in your next. I am living at the ole man¹s and will build on his plantation this year. My companions¹ name was Sarah Hutton. For summary of news I refer you to 1st and 2nd pages. With the most sincere wish for your prosperity together with that of your lady. I remain your Relative, J. D. Bellah … J. D. Bellah is Dr. John Davidson Bellah (1818-1889), son of John D. Bellah and Sarah Davidson. … Cousin James is James Samuel Gibson (1815-). He and his wife moved to Gibson Co., TN in 1837.
