There has been so much controversy as to the origin of the EMERTS I will not go into the theories met with in this research but continue in the belief of my early ancestors and the information they gave me. The first of our ancestors to settle in Sevier County TN in the latter part of the eighteenth century was described as "White Deutch" and spoke with a defined German accent. They had first settled in Pennsylvania, later moving to VA, NC and then, TN. They settled in Sevier County. There have been numerous spellings of the name, making research difficult. The 1830-1840 census has spellings of EMMITT, EMIT, EMOT, EMETT and EMMOTT. The original spelling was probably EMMOTT as records of early correspondence would indicate. In 1865, while in the Army, Fredrick Styles EMERT signed his name EMORT but addressed letters to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick E. EMMOTT. Our first proven ancestor was Fredrick EMERT I, believed to be the son of John EMERT (EMMOTT) who left Leipzip, Germany in 1732 and settled in PA. In 1777 he signed an oath of allegience in Burks Co. PA. John George EMMOTT (EMERT) was born in 1716 in Germany and died in 1796 in Reading, Burks County, PA USA. He married Eva Marie GRAFF in 1742. Believed to be the children of John George EMMOTT (EMERT): 1. Fredrick EMMOTT born 11 Oct. 1754 in PA. 2. Leonard EMMOTT was born in 1774 in Burks PA and died in 1804 in Maryland. He married Catherine GUNCKLE. 3. Daniel EMMOTT 4. George EMMOTT was born 1757 and died in 1846 in Carter Co TN He married Mary CONLEY. 5. Jacob EMMOTT was born 1760-1770 6.
