He died October 22, 1900 in Sevier County. He married Elender McMahan, daughter of David McMahan and Mary Large. Gilbert R. Maples is found on Census Records for Sevier County from 1850 thru 1880. He is also mentioned in his father's Will. He was a farmer and lived in District #4, Sevierville Post Office. Gilbert R. Maples served in Co M 2nd Tennessee Cavalry during the Civile War and received a pension for his service. From National Archives, War Department October 12, 1887 Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions. Gilbert Maples (age 44), a Private of Company E 2nd Regiment Tennessee Cavalry Volunteers, was enrolled on the 1st day of December 1862 at Nicholasville, Ky for 3 years, and is reported on Roll of Co from October 31, 1862 to February 28, 1863 near Murfreesboro, Tennessee present with (?). Left in hospital Louisville, Ky December 18, 1862. Not on subsequent Rolls of Co E. Return for May, 1863 (first on file) reports him as of Co E Absent in hospital Louisville, Ky December 18, 1862. Not on subsequent returns to October, 1863. On Roll of Co M same Regiment (to which transferred March 1, 1863) from June 30, to October 31, 1863. (first on which shown) he is reported as Gilbert R. Maples, present. Roll December 3, 1863, absent, left sick at Nashville, Tenn December 27, 1863. Roll February 29, 1864 presence or absence not stated. Not shown on returns for January, March, 1863. Return February, 1864 not on file. Roll April 30, 1864, present. June 30, 1864 shown as Gifford R. Maples present, so shown to October 31, 1864. From the National Archives, Bureau of Pensions: It is hereby certified that in conformity with the laws of the United States Elenor Maples Widow of Guilford R. Maples who was a Private Co M 2nd Regiment Tenn Vol Cavalry is entitled to a pension at the rate of Twelve dollars per month to commence on the Twenty Third day of October, 1900 and to continue during her widowhood. Given at the Department of the Interior this First day of June, 1901 and of the Independence of the United States Of America the one hundred and twenty fifth. To the Chief, Finance Division February 12, 1917 You are hereby notified that check #3553770 for $60 dated February 4, 1917 in favor of Elenor Maples, Sevierville, Tenn 513672 Civil War Widow Route #6 Section 5 has been returned to this office by the Postmaster with the information that the pensioneer died December 4, 1916 and said check has this day been canceled.
