He was therefore born in February, 1758. He enlisted in 1776 in Washington County, Virginia and served in Captain Colville's company, Colonel Arthur Campbell's regiment. Afterward he served several tours during the next four or five summers and was engaged against the Indians on the headwaters of Clinch River once under Colonel Evan Shelby and once or twice under Lieutenant Newell. He enlisted in September, 1780, and served in Captain Dysart's company. Colonel William Campbell's regiment and was in the battle of King's Mountain. In 1781 he served again in Colonel William Campbell's regiment and was in the battle of Guilford Court House. There are no family data in his statement and he does not give the place of his birth.
