STRANGLER AND HIS VICTIM--Harmon NORRIS confessed at Blytheville,Ark.,to pinning
hands of Noel KYLE,while Dudley NORRIS strangled the Lepanto school teacher with a
hay wire."When KYLE quit jerking and fell over,"he said,'I told Dudley he
shouldn't have done it.But we throwed the body in the weeds and drove away in
KYLE's new Car.Dudley won't be took alive,He's hard.'

MAN UNCONSCIOUS FOLLOWING FALL--Elder HYNES,30,was seriously injured in a
fall,hitting his head on the curbing.A worker for International Harvester,is
believed he has fractured skull.

BOY MANGLED UNDER TRAIN;TRIED TO HOP TRAIN--He is Erwin TISDELL,16 years,whose
right arm and shoulder were shattered Friday afternoon when he tried to hop a fast
train at Woodstock.He is from Michigan.

FIRST AUTO VICTIM THIS YEAR--W.C.TORIAN,30,one-man street car operator,on his way
to work Saturday at 4:30 a.m.,was knocked doen by an auto under the Bellevue
subway.The driver took him to the hospital,but didnot leave his name.

NEW PROSECUTORS SWORN IN SATURDAY--Phil M.WALLACE and George J.COLEMAN were sworn
as assistants to Attorney General W.T.McLAIN.Will GARBER was promoted to the place
left vacant by John SHEA. Sworn in by Mike M.COHEN,WALLACE replaces C.P.J.
MOONEY,Jr.SHEA went into private practice with Sam BATES.

DEATH--OLIVIA B.ROGERS,died in Southern Pines,NC on Thursday.Funeral at the home
of Mrs.James E. BEASLEY Mrs.T.J.RICHARDSON,of Koshkonong,Mo.,a sister is her only
survivor.

DEATH--LAURA B.BURLEIGH LAMBERT,66 years.Funeral at the home of F.L.BOWKER
Saturday.Burial in Elmwood Cemetery.One daughter,Mrs.F.L.BOWKER,of Memphis;two
sisters,Mrs.R.Y.HOWARD of Lakeland,Fla., & Mrs.Ida SNELL,of Los Angeles,Calif.;two
brothers,W.T.BURLEIGH and H.J.BURLEIGH;and one half-brother,JosephBROADLEY,all of
Memphis survives.

DEATH--Mrs.Dorsie C.BARRETT.Funeral at the home of Mrs.W.R.GRAVES Saturday.The
body will be sent to Jackson,Miss.,for burial.Surviving are two
daughters,Mrs.W.R.GRAVES,of Memphis and Mrs.H.H.BETHURNE,of Newton,Miss.;one
son,A.C.BARRETT,of Montgomery,Ala.;and the widower,O.P.BARRETT of Newton,Miss.

DEATH--CHARLES FRANCES CUNEO services will be held at the Collins funeral home
Saturday.Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.Survivors are his father,Charles CUNEO;
mother,Evelyn AUGUSTUS CUNEO;and brother,Charles Harry CUNEO.

DEATH--STEPHEN P.CONDON,funeral services will be held at Knoxville,Tenn.,Sunday
morning.He died of  pneumonia while visiting his sons;Charles CONDO and Raymond
Condon,in Clarksville.He was a son of the late John CONDON,who built the
Cincinnati Southern Railroad.

DEATH--MRS.RUTH JONES DOBBINS,33,of Watkins-st died at the Woman's hospital
Saturday.Her body will be sent to Kenton,Tenn.,for services and
interment.Surviving her are her two weeks old daughter,Emma Margaret; her
husband,H.B.DOBBINS;and one sister,Mrs.J.C.LEWIS,of Memphis.

DEATH--SAMUEL H.STOUT,funeral services will be held at Calvary church Sunday.He
was 58.The body will be sent by way of the L.& N.Railroad to Bowling Green,Ky.,for
interrment.He is survived by his widoe,Mrs.Quennie STOUT;two daughters,Annie
MORTON & Margaret STOUT;two brothers,John STOUT & Edward STOUT.

YOUTH LAST ARREST IN 1926--Homer Van HORN,18, has the honor of being the last man
arrested in 1926, carried a gun to celebrate.Patrolman W.A. COFFEE arrested him
before he had time to use it. The honors of the first arrest of 1927 goes to
Patrolmen Billy CROGAN & C.S.RUTLAND,Lizzie WOODS,52,negress,was arrested for
violating the liquor law and running a disorderly house.Lawrence WOODS,21,and
Delia & Charlie TEEMS for disorderly conduct.

SLAYER OF TEACHER (picture)--A shining "flivver"and 40 cents was the price Harmon
NORRIS accepted for killing Noel KYLE,Lepanto,Ark.,school teacher of Tupelo,Miss.

RESTAURANT BANDIT BELIEVED TO BE DYING--C.E.WILLIAMS,25,bandit who was shot
several nights ago,attempting to hold up Renegar's cafe is believed Monday to be
dying. Phil Clark HADDEN,21,his "pal" in the hold-upattempt is in jail.

RECOVERS NEW COUPE--R.E.EGON reported theft of a new coupe to Sheriff KNIGHT.
Dr.G.JOHNSON called and reported a coupe near Mount Vernon church in
Millington.EGON identified it as his.

MR.& MRS.OSCAR LAMAR HOUSTON--of Tunica,Miss.,will entertain with a dinner-dance
Saturday night in honor of Miss Blythe THOMPSON and Miss Katherine BUTLER.Members
of the debutante group and the Junior Cotillion club and their escorts are: Miss

present.Miss FARGARSON,receiving with Francis CROCKARD,of Birmingham,and with
Vance NORFLEET,wore a spring frock of crepe,shaded from pale pink to deep
rose.Miss RAGLAND,receiving with Norfleet TURNER,wore a straightline model of
black satin,with a bertha of princess lace.

MR.& MRS.T.LEE MILLER WILL ENTERTAIN--Saturday night with a ball at their home on
Overton Park-av in honor of their houseguests,Mr.& Mrs.Frank CROCKARD,Francis
CROCKARD and Mr.& Mrs.Robert MYES,of Birmingham,Ala.Friends of the hosts and
members of the sub-deb crowd will make up a list of 350 guests.

PARTIES FOR MISS CATHERINE COLLINS--Miss Catherine COLLINS,whose marriage to
Martin B.WENZLER will take place on Jan.5th,will be complimented with a dance at
the Catholic club Saturday night by Miss Genevieve SPARKS and Mr.&
Mrs.L.E.SPARKS.Guests will number 135. Tuesday night Miss COLLINS was complimented
by Miss Estelle CARR with a bunco and dancing party.The guest list was limited to
intimate friends of honored guest.Sunday afternoon,Mrs.W.L.CASEY and Mrs.Harry

MISS NATALIE ISENBERG--entertained the girls home from college and the out-of-town
guests with a tea Friday afternoon in honor of her guest,Miss Juliet MEYER,of
Chicago,who arrived Friday morning to spend a few days in the city.

GLISSON NOT SO WILLING TO TAKE MEDICINE--Courtney GLISSON,former Bank of Commerce
and Trust Co.teller of $463,000 fame will attempt to dicker with the State in an
effort to get off with a light sentence.His attorney is Sam O.BATES.

WOMAN BURNED WHEN DRESS CATCHES FIRE;ANNISTON,ALA.,JAN.1ST--Mrs.Ralph
W.HAMILTON,society matron,was in a hospital today,perhaps fatally burned,a victim
of an open fire.HAMILTONis a son of C.A.HAMILTON,millionaire local pipe
manufacturer.

WILD PARTIES FLOORED CUPID HUSBAND--He brought her home and she went in for
wet,wild parties,Sam ALEXANDER says of his wife,Fannie May,in a divorce petition
filed in circuit court.They were married in September 1919 and in 1924,he bought a
house and gave it to her.(can't read rest of story.)

MOURN DEATH OF JOSEPH NEWBURGER--Congregation Children of Israel recognize his
devout faith with Resolutions.

LOSE FIGHT TO GAIN CHILDREN--T.W.LYLES,the father,charged his wife with beating
and cursing them;she charged he failed to support them.He once kidnapped them and
took all three to Mississippi,she said. Judge GUTHRIE said he would either send
the children,two boys and a girl,to an uncle in East Tennessee,or to the Bartlett
Training School.

NURSES' HOME TO BE DECICATED--The new $125,000 nurses' home at General
hospital,built as a memorial to Dr.Marcus HAASE,late chairman of the medical
advisory board of the institution,will be decicated Thursday.Mayor PAINE,Charles
J.HAASE,brother of the deceased physician will be speakers.Other speakers:
Dr.O.W.HYMAN,Jesse DEAN,Mrs.Earl HARRIS,R.O.JOHNSTON and J.L.McGEHEE.

GUN VICTIM SAW A DREAM FULFILLED;MADE A SCOUT;CLARKSDALE,MISS.,JAN.1ST--Escorted
by 100 Boy Scouts,of Coahoma and other Delta counties,the body of Willie GLENN,11-
year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.W.L.GLENN,of this city,was buried in Oakrdge Cemetery
Friday.Rev.Henry F.BROOKS officiating.Active Pallbearers were:Homer CORLEY;Louis
BORNMAN;J.O.WALLIS; Charles COLE; Joseph CRUTCHER; and John HEAD,all members of
Troup #3;Dusty BULLOCK,scoutmaster.The boy was planning to join,he turned 12 years
old Monday.The boy died of blood poisoning.Agun accidently discharged in the hands
of his playmate and fellow scout,James HATCHETT,14 years.John Porter HARDY,eagle
scout,of Walls,Miss.,sounded taps over his grave.

BURGLAR GOT $4--Mrs.E.F.WORTHINGTON,Lamar-blvd called police Friday night to
report a burglar had enteredher home the night before and had stolen $4 and
several articles of clothing.A window was jimmied.

MAMA WEDS PAPA,DAUGHTER WEDS SON--Kansas City,Mo.,Dec.31st. Dan Cupid has made the
holidays merry in at least two homes.The son is Floyd R.ANDREW, 20 and the girl
bride was Miss Maxine DAVIS, 18. Floyd'sannouncement stunned his father, Wilbur
E.ANDREW,51. He sought a hurried conference with the mother of his son's
bride,Mrs.E.H.BAKER.  Rev.D.J. EVANS performed a double wedding ceremony.

NEGRO FIRST OF 1927 HOMICIDE VICTIMS--John HENDERSON,negro,became the 1st homicide
of 1927 when he died at noon Monday as a result of injuries received in a fight
Sunday night with R.G. GILMORE,magazine agent.

WOMAN SUED FOR INJURIES IN CRASH--Mrs.Ella SMITH filed suit in circuit court
Monday against Mrs.J.W.SOUTH for $3000 damages,charging she was permanently
injured when Mrs.SOUTH's car struck hers at Mississippiave & S.Parkway on November
25th.A.J.SMITH,her husband,also sued Mrs.SOUTH,asking $1,000 for the loss of
hiswife's services,repairs on her car,and her doctor bill.

GUARD SLAYER OF 13 FROM MOB VIOLENCE--Plainview,Texas.Jan.3rd. George J.HASSEL
will not be taken to Farwell,N.M,because of fear of mob violence,Sheriff Sam FAITH
said.Convalescing from self-inflicted knife wounds,HASSEL was brought here
following his alleged confession that he killed his family of nine on a ranch near
the Texas-New Mexico line,and his first wife and three adopted children in
California ten years ago.

SAYS REST DISTRUBED BY CONCRETE MIXER--Joe WILLIAMS,of Sledge ave,filed suit in
Chancery Court Monday against Vernon SCHEVENELL,contractor.The case will be tried
before Chancellor DeHAVEN.

WHITFIELD TO GO HOME--Governor Henry L.WHITFIELD,of Mississippi,confined because
of a recent amputation of his left leg,will leave Baptist hospital Thursday for
the executive mansion at Jackson,Miss.

AUTO VICTIM IMPROVES--John CLARK,74,knocked down by a hit and run driver at Union
ave and Lauderdale st Saturday,was improving Monday at General hospital.His
injuries are not serious.

YOUTH IS HELD AS "BICYCLE BANDIT."--A 21 year-old boy (not named) was arrested by
police as being the bandit who stole $1900 payroll of Pidgeon-Thomas Iron Co.,from
R.E.BECKER,messanger.He was arrested after V.K. ATHERSON,19,went to police
headquarters and claimed a bicycle found at the hold-up scene.He told Inspector
Will GRIFFIN he lent it to the youth being held.Police searched ATHERSON and found
a pistol on him.

MEMPHIS WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH--Mrs.Harriet Lucille LEE,wife of W.C. LEE,of
Memphis,was killed,and C.C.BERRYHILL seriously injured near Little Rock late
Sunday when their car left the road and plunged into a ditch. Mrs.LEE's neck was
broken.The LEES lived with Mrs.Jennie EPPERSON,197 S.Lauderdale st,and had packed
their baggage to leave Memphis Saturday,Mrs.EPPERSON says.LEE left Memphis Monday
to identify and claim the body.

PROBE ANOTHER POLICE "BEATING."--Another complaint of policemen beating citizens
with pistols are being investigated Monday by Police Chief Joe BURNEY.Patrolman
J.M.McDANIELS has been accused of slugging a 17-year-old youth with his pistol.He
denies the charges.The youth,Morris FOLEY,student,of 914 Arkansas st,was arrested
for drunkeness.According to the story told by FOLEY,he and two other boys were
arrested on charges of being drunk by Patrolmen J.K.CROSS and McDANIEL.The FOLEY
complaint comes on the heels of an assault made on two Press-Scimitar reporters in
the Peabody Thursday night.Guns and fists were used on the reporters by Detective
Lieut.Lee QUIANTHY and Hotel Dectective Sam EMBERTON,they say.

GIRL HIT BY AUTO;SLIGHTLY INJURED--Sunday night when struck by an auto while
crossing the street in front of her home,Edith McCASEY,4, of Central av,was
improving at her home Monday.Her parents witnessed the accident.Luther
WILSON,negro,the driver of the car was not arrested.

URGES NEGROES TO BUY OR BUILD HOMES--Rev.J.M.WILLIAMSON says work and sleep are
best to make healthy,more dependable and law abiding negroes.Thomas
SMITH,Rev.Charley HOUSE,Rev.R.BRYANT,and other leading negroes took part in the
meeting.

COUNTY GIVES UP 'EYE DOCTOR'--"Doctor"J.D.CONNERS,alias HARRIS,alias HARPER,was
freed of charges of larceny by trick,scheme and obtaining money under false
pretenses on payment of costs in second criminal court Monday,and sent to
Millington,Tenn.,for trial on similar charges.CONNERS,who with an accomplice posed
as an eye doctor,was charged with taking $361 from Mrs.M.LOWDERMILK,her entire
life savings for an operation to remove a cataract from her eye.The operation was
never performed.

DEATH;OLIVIA B.ROGERS--funeral services for Mrs.Olivia B.ROGERS were conducted by
Bishop Thomas F. GAILOR at the residence of Mrs.James F. BEASLEY,McLean Blvd at 11
a.m.Monday.Interment in Elmwood cemetery.Mrs.ROGERS is survived by a
sister,Mrs.T.J.RICHARDSON of Koshkonog,Mo.

DEATH;MARY HUTCHINSON--Funeral services for Mrs.Mary HUTCHINSON were conducted by
Monsigner P.L. MAHONEY at Sacred Heart Catholic church.Interment was in Calvary
cemetery.Mrs.HUTCHINSON is survived by a daughter,Mrs.Thomas J.CLARK,and two
sons,Joseph HUTCHINSON and James C.PIGEON.
