He was transferred to Smith County, Tennessee and drew pension there until his death, in 1838. He was born in Hanover County, Virginia, and was the son of Henry and Margaret Hughes. He enlisted in Virginia troops at the age of 16 and was in the battles of Brandywine, Malvern Hill, Charles City Court House, and the Siege of Yorktown. After the War he moved to Bedford County, Va., and in 1805 to Campbell County, Virginia. He moved to Smith County, Tennessee, in 1835. Note: He married ____ Tucker, daughter of Littleberry Tucker, of Hanover County, Virginia. She survived the soldier and continued to reside in Smith County.
