His age is not given nor the place of his birth. He enlisted in May, 1777, in Captain Dempsey Gregory's company, Colonel Shepherd's 10th North Carolina regiment and was later transferred to Captain Howell Tatum's North Carolina company. His term of enlistment, which was three years, expired during the Siege of Charleston but he was imprisoned there during the siege and was not released until some time in 1781.
