Kingston: East Tennesseean Print, 1874" PROCEEDINGS The Hiwassee Baptist Association convened at Shiloah Church House, Roane County, Tennessee, on Friday before the Fourth Saturday in September, 1874, in it's fifty-second Annual Session. (Ninth after the union.) The introductory sermon was preached by Elder Asa Newport, from Matt: 16, 18, "And upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." After an intermission of twenty minutes, the delegates assembled in the house. The Association was called to order by its former Moderator, E.S. Bailey, and after prayer by Eld. Z. The delegates, viz: Eld. J.C.J. Selvidge and Bros. P.H. Hopkins and R.W. Wood from Stockton's Valley Association. were invited to seats and right-hand of fellowship extended. No delegates from Eastanallee Association. 3d. Directed Clerk to write letters of correspondence to the above named associations. 4th. Appointed corresponding delegates as follows: To Stockton's Valley when convened at Beech Bottom Church House, Clinton county, Ky., on second Saturday in September, 1875 - Elds. A.D. Morrison, M.E. Jones. J.K. Chastain, and Bros. E.S. Bailey, J.S. Clack, E.M. Ewing, J.R. Hollomon, C. Egeman, W.C. Casson and G.H. Wade. To Eastanallee, when convened at Cog Hill Church House, McMinn County, Tenn., on Friday before the Second Saturday in September, 1875 - Elds. J.H. Pope and Asa Newport. 5th. Invited visiting ministers, from sister Associations to seats with us, which invitation was accepted by Elds. William Dowel, and G.W. Suggs and Bro. N.C. Redman, respectively from South Concord Sweet Water and Eastanallee Associations, to whom the right hand of fellowship was extended. 6th. Appointed as a committee to arrange the unfinished business of this Association Elds. J.B. McCallon, Z. Rose and Bros. E.S. Bailey, W. Wann and J.B. Waller, with Moderator and Clerk, to report to-morrow morning. 7th. Appointed one delegate from each church, with Shiloah Church, as a committee, to arrange preaching during the session and report. 8th. Appointed Bros. F. Pickle and W.H. Ball a committee on finance, to report to-morrow morning. 9th. Appointed Bro. W.C. Carson, Treasurer 10th. Invited corresponding brethren to act with the committee on arrangement. Committee on preaching report, to preach to-night: Elds. J.C.J. Selvidge and G.W. Suggs. Adjourned till to-morrow morning, nine o'clock. Prayer by Eld. J.B. McCallon. SECOND DAY Saturday morning 9 o'clock. The Association met pursuant to adjournment. Prayer by Moderator. 1st. Called the roll and erased the names of delinquents. 2nd. Called for report of committee on arrangements. REport received and committee discharged. 3d. Read rules of decorum 4th. Called for report of committee on preaching. Report: Saturday - Elds. A. Newport, Wm. Dowel and G.W. Suggs, Saturday night Elds. M. E. Jones and J.K. Chastain. In case of failure, Elds J.C.J. Selvidge and Sunday Eld. Z. Rose and J.B. McCallom. By request of J.B. McCallom, Eld. J.C.J. Selvidge was substituted for him on Sunday. 5th. Called for report of committee on Finance. Report - Present contribution $20.70 In hands of Clerk 4.25 Total $24.95 6th. Resolved, that we inquire into the condition of Pine City Church, information having been received that she, one of the churches of our union, under the ministry of Elder D.S. Helton, invided pedo-baptists to her communion. And, whereas, it is the sense of this Association that said act was not only a violation of the organic principles upon which her body was organized, but a departure from the teaching of the Scriptures. Therefore, be it resolved that we appoint three of our body to visit said church, inquire into the facts of the case, and report to our next Association. We appoint as a committee Bros. P.W. Evans, J.R. Hollomon and Elder Asa Newport. 8th. On motion, we agree that we will not, for the present, take steps to supply the destitution of this association. 9th. Eld. C.B. Martin, a corresponding delegate from Sweetwater Association was invited to a seat, and right hand of fellowship extended. 10th. A majority of the Churches of this Association have thought it not advisable to accept the answers of the Council Meeting of Baptists held in Overton county, Tenn., on Friday before the 2d Saturday in April 1874, to the questions proposed to them. 11th. Appointed our next Annual Session to be held at Caney Ford Church House, Roane county, Tenn., on Friday before the fourth Saturday in September, 1875, and following days; and appoint Elder Z. Rose to preach the introductory sermon, and Eld. M.E. Jones, alternate. 12th. Ordered eight hundred copies of our minutes printed - Clerk to superintend printing and distribution, and receive ten dollars for his services. 13th. Letters of correspondence to Stockton's Valley and Eastanallee Associations were read, received and ordered to be signed. 14th. On motion, agreed to send letter and delegates to Sweetwater Association, when convened at Old Sweetwater Church house, Monroe county, Tenn., on Friday before the third Sabbath in September, 1875, and appoint as our delegates Eld. A. Carter and Bros. W.H. Ball, Wm. Whitlock, P.W. Evans, James Ewing and W.M. Owens. 15th. Elds. C.B. Martin and D.V. Culver were appointed to preach Saturday night, instead of the ministers appointed by the committee. Letter to Sweetwater read and received. On motion, Eld, C.B. Martin was granted time to speak in the interest of an East Tennessee Baptist Paper to be published at Knoxville, Tenn., by H.B. McCallum. Resolved, that we tender our sincere thanks to this Church and community for their hospitable entertainment, and kindness during our Session. Minutes read, approved and ordered to be signed.
