Zion and Byrd's Branch? Answers will be found at close of these minutes. "It seems to us that discipline, to some extent, is fast becoming a thing of the past; and because of this the query is sent. Three churches, members of Hiwassee Association, failed to represent in the association and we sent a committee to each church inquiring why it was so. Fairview answered for herself: ""That the church was out of trouble and they would stay out. Said they thought Bro. Graves would appeal to the Association and they did not want to get into more trouble; therefore they thought they would not represent."" The committee sent to inquire of Pleasant Hill her cause for failure to represent in the Association were answered: 1st. They did not have a pastor. 2nd. Principally carelessness on their part. The committee sent to the church at Maple Grove reports that the first reason was ""they wanted to get back home;"" second ""on account of two or three and to keep peace at home they agreed to represent in Walnut Grove Association." "... without a word of censure these three churches were dropped from our roll of churches." Report of J.P. Sharp: Traveled about 1867 miles; preached about 96 sermons; received from Churches $43.15. Elders J.P. Sharp and M.L. Blankenship again requested to preach to the destitute places in the bounds of the Association. ("Destitute" usually meaning churches without pastors -EC) Elder J.B. McCallon to be Treasurer this year. Next Association meeting to be held at Mt. Zion: "Is it right for a church belonging to one Association to withdraw from it and represent in another Association in correspondence with the first, without obtaining a letter of dismission?" Basically their answer was: Three churches had left the Hiwassee Association (Fairview, Maple Grove, and Pleasant Hill) and joined Walnut Grove without getting a letter from the Hiwassee Association. They felt they should come to them and get a letter, it would be the right thing to do. They dropped those three churches from their roll. ANSWER TO QUERY FROM BYRD'S BRANCH CHURCH They advised Byrd's Branch not to accept members from Sister Churches without a letter from that Church. They also resolved that J.B. Graves go back to Fairview and ask them to restore him to membership. They also advised Byrd's Branch to not accept members, without letters, who had been excluded from another church. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
