Ewing appointed to prepare an obituary for Elder J.B. McCallon. Called for a report of the Committee appointed to visit Byrd's Branch and look into it's irregularities. A synopsis of the report shows that the trouble was brought about by one J.B. Graves, who was an excluded member of Fairview Church, acting as pastor claiming to this church (Byrd's Branch) that he had been restored to membership by Fairview church, which was false. We therefore publish him as an excluded member and an impostor. We learn that Jake Kiser, claiming to be a minister of the gospel, is an excluded member and is practicing the same fraud on some churches we desire to brand him as an impostor also. Next meeting will be with Shilo Church, Roane County, Tenn. Ordered 1,500 copies of the Minutes to be printed. Report on Obituaries: 22 deaths. Pisgah (1): James C. Crane born June 28, 1850, died Aug. 7, 1904 Shiloh (2): John A. Barnard and M.L. Bailey. John A. Barnard was born in Hawkins County, Tenn., May 31, 1813. Died Jan. 31, 1904. His father moved to Roane County, Tenn., when he was about 9 years old where he spent the remainder of his life except two years which was spent at Clinton, Tenn., where he died. In 1838, he was married to Eliza J. Campbell, who still survives him. Also five sons and two daughters. Himself and wife joined the Baptist Church at Shiloh, Roane County, Tenn., fourth Saturday in August, 1842. They were consistent members of the church and walked together as man and wife, brother and sister in the church for nearly 63 years. He was appointed Clerk of the church April 27, 1844, served as Clerk over 20 years. His religious character was beyond question. The spirit of ministry to the poor and needy was a prominent feature of his life. As a husband and father none could be more truer or more affectionate. In 1875 he represented Roane County in the lower house of the Legislature. He served as Justice of the Peace for a number of years. He educated his children, all of whom are progressive and honored citizens and most of them are members of the church. When his life went out Shiloh Church lost one of its most honored members. He was conservative, moderate and prudent in all things in fact a model Christian man. Bro. M.L. Bailey was born 1850, joined the church fourth Saturday in August, 1866, died April 29th, 1904. McCallon The subject of this sketch, Elder James Bolivar McCallon, was born at Athens, Tenn., Nov. 23, 1827, died at his home at Ten Mile Stand, Meigs County, Tenn., on Sept. 11th, 6 o'clock p.m., 1904. Age 78 years, 6 months and ___days. He united with Concord Baptist Church, being baptised by Elder M.H. Sellers, (the last person he ever baptised), the second Sunday in August, 1858. Liberated to exercise his gift to preach second Saturday in Feb. 1859. Ordained to the full work of the ministry second Saturday in October, 1861. It seemed that the mantle of Elder Sellers fell upon Brother McCallon as he came out of the water preaching and he fully consecrated his talent, his time, his all, to the proclamation of the glad news of salvation. His work in the main was within the bounds of the Hiwassee Association of which he was the recognized leader, being it's moderator or clerk at a number of its sessions and being the pastor at different periods of nearly every church within it's bounds. Besides this he has preached all over the mountain section of East Tennessee and Kentucky, holding many successful revivals. He was truly a remarkable man in many things, perhaps the greater being his wondefrul memory, quoting readily any passage from God's word, and being able to repeat the four gospels entire. And then he had great intellect and matchless pulpit powers, being one of the greatest sermonizers of his day. He was rarely ever known to miss one of his appointments. Many more things could be truthfully said of his Christ-like walk and conversation, of his remarkable devotion to his family and friends, of his great faith and zeal, but let this suffice. Like all mortals he had his faults. Some great writer has said: "'Tis human to err, To forgive is divine." His mistakes were of the head and not the heart. So we should throw the mantle of charity over them and let his old churches and association emulate his many virtues. His family will miss him, his churches will hear no more his matchless sermons and earnest and eloquent prayers, his friends will see his face no more here, his voice be heard no more in the councils of his old association, but some day we shall see him and know him in that home where death can never come and where God's own hand shall wipe all tears away from our eyes. It was his custom to go to his home after the day's services on Sunday and rest from his labors with his family and loved ones. So it seemed fitting that the summons should come at the close of the Sabbath day, and that he should go Home to be with Jesus and loved ones gone before. His funeral was held at Concord Church House on Monday at 3 o'clock p.m., Elder R.J. Gorbet and S.A. Waller officiating. His body, surrounded by those that loved him, was laid in the old graveyard to await the resurrection morn. "A prince in Israel is fallen, Servant of God well done - Rest from thy loved employ." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
