Hale DR. O. H. ATKINS. One of Cumberland City's physicians, whose career has been auspiciously begun, with promise of constantly widening service, is Dr. O. H. Atkins. From the time of his birth he has been associated with life and events of Tennessee, in their various phases familiar to residents of this locality. His father's family is of Pennsylvania origin, his grandfather, George Atkins, having come in his youth from the Keystone state to this commonwealth. He settled in Murray county and that region was the birthplace of his son, William Jasper Atkins (1832-1894). Though reared and educated in his native county, William Atkins became familiar in his early manhood, through his profession of teaching, with various points in the state and eventually chose Stewart county as his subsequent home. He married Miss Fedora Foster (1848-1905), a native of Oakwood, Montgomery county. Their marriage took place at Indian Mound in 1875. The family residence was on rural property, although William Atkins gave most of his time to the business of real estate dealing. He was a Democrat in politics and was very active in political affairs. For an extensive term of years he officiated as magistrate of Civil District No. 5, of Stewart county. He was a man of strong personality as well as of strong character and therefore exerted an obvious influence upon those about him. A deeply interested member of the Methodist church, South, he was licensed as a local preacher, but never cared to hold a circuit. He affiliated fraternally with the Masonic lodge at Indian Mound. The only son of William and Fedora Atkins was named Orman Hensley. He was born at Fedora, Stewart county, on December 22, 1884. The public schools of his native community, supplemented by a high school course in Cumberland City, gave O. H. Atkins his general educational preparation for life. Having conceived ambitions toward the beneficent profession of medicine, he entered Vanderbilt University at Nashville and there pursued the courses leading to his degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1910 this end was accomplished and the young physician chose as the field for his subsequent practice the attractive city in which he had attended school. Here his habits of uprightness, the quality of his intelligence and his conscientious attention to the duties in hand, has given him a reputation which has proved to be an excellent background against which to establish his professional status. He has met with success which is said to be flattering for a young physician and a credit to one of any length of experience. Before he had entered upon his period of professional preparation, Dr. Atkins had won his life's comrade in Miss Jessie Parchment, a daughter of J. M. Parchment of Cumberland City. Their marriage took place in 1906 and they have in the succeeding years become the parents of three small daughters, named Mary, Louise and Elizabeth. Both Dr. Atkins and Mrs. Atkins are members of the Methodist church, South, of Cumberland City, the doctor officiating as steward of this religious organization. He is a member of the Order of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in Charity Lodge No. 370, in Cumberland City, and in his collegiate fraternity membership he is affiliated with the Phi Chi, a secret society to which only medical students are eligible. Dr. Atkins is fortunate in possessing, both professionally and personally, many of the characteristics which make for success.
