He enlisted in Captain Adam Wallace's and Captain White's companies in Colonel Davis's Virginia regiment. He was in the battle of Monmouth and in Buford's Defeat. He served three years when he received a discharge. Twelve months later he re-enlisted and served in Captain Thomas's company and Captain Johnston's company in Colonel How's Virginia regiment. In 1820 he was living in Sullivan County when he stated that he was seventy-one years of age the "twelfth day of last January." He was therefore born January 12, 1749. He died May 13, 1824.
