He entered the service in Virginia trosps under command of Captain William Buchanan and was in the battle of Long Island under command of Colonel William Christian. He was associated with Colonel Elijah Robinson and Captain Evan Shelby in the Cherokee Campaign. He was under Captain John Pemberton in the battle of King's Mountain.
