He served in the battles of Germantown, Stony Point, Monmouth and Brandywine. He was discharged from service in Trenton, N. J. His daughter, Elizabeth Chester, states that he died Feb. 4, 1841, and that he left a widow, Mary Birdwell Chester, who died Oct., 17, 1852, born 1766. At her death the surviving children were Elizabeth, Obadiah and Jane who married a Patterson. The original page of the Family Bible is enclosed with the widow's application giving the following information: John Chester married Mary Birdwell, March 21, 1781. Their children were: Elizabeth, born Sunday, Dec. 25, 1787; Robert, born Wednesday, Dec., 9, 1789; John, born Thursday, Oct., 20, 1791; Mark, born Friday, Sept., 13, 1793; Jane born Wednesday, Jan., 6, 1796; Ezra, born Wednesday, Dec., 20, 1797; Mary, born Dec., 3, 1800; George, born Feb., 6, 1802; Obadiah, born Sunday, June 17, 1805; Nancy, born Friday, July 14, 1811. The following marriages are recorded on tne Bible page: Robert Chester married Feb., 1810; John Chester married Dec., 15, 1814; Ezra Chester married June 25, 1818; Obadiah Chester married Feb., 11, 1835.
