He was born in Amelia County, Va. He enlisted in Virginia troops as a substitute for his father, Robert Gaines, and served in Capt. John Oliver's company Col. William Campbell's regiment. He was in the battle of Guilford Court House and the Siege of Yorktown. He died in Sullivan County, Jan. 12, 1840 and his widow, Mary Moore Gaines, whom he married in Stokes County, N. C., June 9, 1792, applied for widow's pension while living in Sullivan County, April 10, 1844. She was born 1771. Note:-Among their children were Elizabeth, born 1798 married William F. Butler, son of Zachariah T. Butler; Matthew Moore, born 1809, died 1893, married No. 11, 1830, Margaret Luttrell, born 1816, died 1892, daughter of James Churchwell Luttrell I. and Margaret Armstrong Luttrell, Samuel D., born Oct. 19, 1811; Sara E., born Dec. 2, 1813; and Francis Henry. Ambrose Gaines, the revolutionary soldier was the son of Robert Gaines and Mildred Bohanan Gaines.
