He was born in Southhampton County, Virginia, in 1758. He moved to what is now Tennessee and while living in Washington County enlisted in Captain Jacob Womack's company. He also served in Captain Roger Topp's company and Captain Dunn's company. He served under Colonels Sevier, Shelby and Cleveland. He was in the battle of Ramsour's Mill. His second wife was Elizabeth Emmert whom he married in Sullivan County in 1814. Hal Massengale died September 23, 1837. His widow, Elizabeth Emmert Massengale, applied for pension while living in Sullivan County in 1854.
