He was born in North Carolina, October 14, 1754. His aunt was Nancy Hays, wife of Henry Hays. He enlisted in North Carolina troops under Capt. Nelson, Lieut. Charles Hughes and Ensign McBride. He lived in Guilford County, N. C., at the beginning of the Revolution and moved to Caswell County during the War. After the War he lived in many places, principally in Sullivan, Roane and Bledsoe Counties, Tenn. He moved to Bledsoe County 1818. He died in Bledsoe County in November, 1834. His widow, Libby Reed, applied in 1840 for widow's pension. She was then living in Bledsoe oCunty. She lived until after 1851. She was married on the border between Guilford and Caswell Counties, N. C., in June 1779, in the home of Henry Hays. Her oldest son, George Reed, was born March 16, 1781. She was within hearing of the guns of the battle of Guilford Court House. The second child was born June 13, 1784. Other children were: James, born 1787; Peggy, born 1789; Henry, born 1792; Polly, born 1795, married David Brown of Morgan County, Tenn., and Libby, born 1795.
