September 24, 1832, when he was "aged seventy-four past." The date and place of his birth and the names of his parents are not given in his pension application. He enlisted while a resident of Sullivan County, then in Virginia and served as a private in Virginia and North Carolina troops. In the fall of 1778 he was three months in Captain Wallace's company in Colonel Isaac Shelby's regiment; in the fall of 1778 he was three months in Captain Jonathan Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; in the spring of 1780 he was three months in Captain William Asher's company and was a substitute for Solomon Smith (no relationship indicated); in the fall of 1780 he was three months again in Captain Webb's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; in the fall of 1781 he was three months in Captain Wallace's or Captain Topp's company in Colonel Shelby's regiment; immediately afterward he enlisted and served one year in Captain McKelvey's company in Colonel Moore's regiment; from the fall of 1782 he served three months in Captain John Scott's company in Colonel John Sevier's regiment.
