He was born Sept. 25, 1918, in Mooresburg, Tenn., a son of the late Robert Lee and Bessie Kate Brooks and had made his home in the Bristol area most of his life. Affectionately known as "Mr. Brooks" by the faculty, staff and students at Tennessee High where he had worked for 12 years after his retirement from Hechts and Purity Bakery, with 43 years of service. He was a 64-year member of South Bristol United Methodist Church and had taught the Adult Sunday School Class for over 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II with the highly decorated 6th Armored Division and was a liberator of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Patton 3rd Army, past president of 6th Army Association and was the recipient of the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. He was a charter member of the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 and the American Legion, member and Past Master of King Masonic Lodge 461, York Rite and Scottish Rite Mason, a charter member of Jericho Shrine Temple, The Royal Order of Scotland and KYCH and Border City Chapter of the Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Clark and Dorothy Greer; four brothers, Clay, Virgil, Edgar and Billy; son-in-law, Frank Boice and twin great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Christine Taylor. Survivors include wife of 64 years, Cora Lee Keesee Brooks; four daughters, Barbara Boice, Carolyn Miller and Susie Thompson and husband, Jeff of Bristol and Martha Taylor and husband Jim of Grand Prairie, Texas; brother, Dick Brooks, Elkins, W.Va.; and special friend and care giver, Patricia Mix. "Poppa" was dearly loved and will be missed by his grandchildren, Angie and Bruce Higley, Leeann and Kurt Carlson, Julie and Jim Rodeback, Betsy and Tracy Graves, Beth and Bryce Cannon, Becky Haga and Rob Taylor as well as his great- grandchildren, Jordan Dunn, Ashley and Kalee Carlson, Jake and Justin Rodeback, Kamryn and Cole Cannon and Meghan, Christopher and Heather Taylor; four step- grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harold Russell and Rev. William Martin officiating. The committal with military honors conducted by the VFW Patton- Crosswhite Post 6975 will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tracy Graves, Jim Rodeback, Kurt Carlson, Bruce Higley, Joe Swiney, Wayne Burnette, Bob Carrier and Jimmy Smith. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Weaver Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, Southern Appalachian RMH, 418 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, TN 37604 or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
