Mrs. Clemons was the fifth of 13 children born to John Alex and Bessie Belle Birchfield Carrier. Born in Sullivan County, she lived most of her life in Carter County. Mrs. Clemons was a member of Unaka Baptist Church and until recently, the Harmony Baptist Church. She was an active member of Harmony WMU and loved her many friends from both churches. She made many beautiful quilts and lovely crocheted doilies. She loved and cared for her family, as they did for her. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Floyd Ike Clemons, three sisters, Mattie Lovelace, Grace Greenwell and Myrtle Blevins, five brothers, Tom, Clinton, Albert, Rev. Bill and Omer Carrier, and a great-grandson, Eli Clemons. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Walter Carrier, Elizabethton; two sons, Wayne Clemons and wife Sherry and W.A. Clemons, all of Elizabethton; her former daughter-in-law, Jan Sparrow, Johnson City; seven grandchildren, Jennifer and husband Dr. Jeff Hopland, Johnson City, Kirk and wife Valerie Carrier and Berley Wayne Clemons, all of Elizabethton, Candace and husband Ben McNabb, Unicoi, Nikki and husband Mimi Pirvu, Johnson City, Natalie Clemons, Johnson City, and Rebecca and husband Bruce Parlier, Montezuma, N.C., and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Clemons is also survived by four sisters and one brother-in-law, Mary Broyles, Life Care Center of Elizabethton, Ruth Reece, Ester Stout and Violet and Rev. Horace Bowers, all of Elizabethton; and special friend and "phone buddy," Mary Peeks, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Clemons will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24, at Harmony Baptist Church with Rev. Walker Roberson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ruth and Rev. Harold McNabb, Kirk Carrier and Rachel Grindstaff. Interment will follow at Emmert Cemetery, Elizabethton, with Rev. Jerry Lyons and Rev. Horace Bowers officiating. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Berley Clemons, Kirk Carrier, Dr. Jeff Hopland, Ben McNabb, Ryan Mick, Ricky Parlier and special friend, Paul Beal. Honorary pallbearers will be Mimi Pirvu, Bruce Parlier, Dan Rash, friends, neighbors, nephews and her church family at Harmony and Unaka Baptist Churches. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 23. Friends may also call at the residence at other times.
