Vanita was born May 22, 1920, in Dunbar, Va., she was a daughter of C.N. (Newt) and Mary Jane (Jackson) Compton. Vanita moved to Kingsport with her parents and her brother at an early age, upon graduation from Dobyns Bennett High School in 1938. Vanita (affectionately called "Sid") spent the summer with her family. She entered Akrom Business College in Akron, Ohio, and upon graduation from there, returned to work at Tennessee Eastman in the accounting department for seven years, she then left Kingsport to live in Bristol and was employed by Foremost Dairies (later known as Farmbest Foods, Inc.) as their switchboard operator and was promoted as an executive secretary which position she held for 20 years. She was forced to take disability retirement in February of 1976 due to severe coronary attacks in August of 1975 and January of 1976. While living and working in Bristol, Vanita was very active in her church, civic and community affairs. She was a member of Rosemont Presbyterian Church, past Matron of Border City Chapter 162, Order of Eastern Star, charter member of Twin City Rebekah Lodge, treasurer of Civinette Club, secretary of Pilot Club and captain of the Foremost Bowling Team winning several awards. Vanita returned to Kingsport in 1977 and became a member of VFW Auxiliary Post 3382 and MOC Auxiliary 18, member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, an avid sports fan, enjoyed baseball, football, basketball, bowling and golf. In addition to her parents, a brother, J.D. Compton; sisters, Joie C. Ennis and Frances Jane Compton preceded her in death. Vanita is survived by her cousins and care givers, Jim and Nancy (Compton) Brown of Kingsport; a niece, Terri Rawlett and her husband Tom, nephew, Kevin Ennis and his wife; brother-in-law, Arch J. Ennis; and sister-in-law, Billie B. Compton. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 8 p.m. Friday in the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with services conducted by the Border City 1620 E.S. Order of the Eastern Star. Family and friends will meet at the East Lawn Memorial Park at 10:45 Saturday for an 11 a.m. graveside service with Walter Pierce officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Dickens, D.O.
