Crussell PINEY FLATS -- Mrs. Jane Smalling Crussell, 74, of 124 Piney Flats Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, in the Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Sullivan County and lived most of her life in Piney Flats. She was the daughter of the late Rankin and Mary Mingea Smalling. Mrs. Crussell was a graduate of Mary Hughes High School and East Tennessee State University with a master's degree. She taught English and home economics for 35 years, retiring in 1985 from East High School. Jane was an active member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church where she served as Clerk of the Session. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Clyde Allen Crussell; one brother, Dr. John David Smalling, Maryville; two sisters: Phyllis Holloway, Chuckey; and Anne Peters, Kingsport; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted 8 p.m. Tuesday from the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Dr. Andrew Spence will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside services and burial will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the New Bethel Cemetery, Piney Flats. Friends are invited to meet the family at the cemetery for this service. For those who wish, memorials may be made to New Bethel Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 592 New Bethel Road, Piney Flats, TN 37686.
