He was the son of the late Carrier Stophel and Luther Basil Greene and was a native of Bristol Tennessee. He was a graduate of Holston Valley High School and Bristol Commercial College. He was a disabled American veteran of World War II flying 25 missions as a B-17 tail gunner with the famed 8th Air Force, Devils Bomber Squadron. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, the European Theatre Ribbon and a Purple Heart. C.R. was a member of Fairmount Presbyterian Church, the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Shelby Masonic Lodge 161, a life member of and Past Jr. Vice Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6975, member and Past 1st Vice Commander of the American Legion Post 145, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 39, the Past Chef de Gare and Chaplain and present Cheminot Officer of Voiature 883 of the 40&8, (the Forty and Eight is a membership by invitation only Honor Society of Legionnaires created in 1920), member of the Travelers Protection Association of Virginia and a member of AARP. He was a long time employee of Raytheon and Incopa Corporations. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Clarence Ralph "Buddy" Greene Jr.; and his only brother, L.B. Greene Jr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Willa Mae Wilson Greene; sons, C. Ron Greene and wife Anita of Shady Valley, Tenn., and David Alan and wife Catherine of Jackson, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Fay Greene of Bristol; grandchildren, Laura Fay Greene Hicks and husband Darren of Jackson, Carey Elizabeth Weaver of Naples, Fla., and Sarah Elizabeth and Nicholas Alexander Greene of Jackson, Tenn.; and great-grandson, Dillon Greene Hicks of Jackson. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at 11 a.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bill Goforth officiating assisted by Rev. Jeff Seeger. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers include Harold Wilson, Darron Hicks, Sam Williams, Lawrence Booher, Dallas Stophel Jr., Nichols A. Green and C.W. "Pete" Booher. Honorary pallbearers include members of the 40&8 and men of the Fellowship Class of Fairmount Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home. The family notes that flowers are welcome, donations to the Disabled American veterans or the Boy Scouts of America may also be made. Online condolences may be made at www.weaverfuneralhome.net.
