Born in Worth, W.Va., on July 12, 1925, a son of the late Charles McKinley and Hattie Maybelle Hall Grindstaff, he has resided in this area since 1970. Mr. Grindstaff was a retired U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He retired following 30 years of service. Mr. Grindstaff was former co-owner of Ideal Pest Control and had been employed at North Electric, Terminex and Orkin. He was a member of the VFW and an avid bowler and sportsman. Mr. Grindstaff played semi-professional baseball with the Bluefield Orioles. He was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Mr. Grindstaff was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Jean Grindstaff. Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Richard and Joann Grindstaff of Chesapeake, Va., William David Grindstaff of Virginia Beach, Va., Mark and Patricia Grindstaff of Bristol Tennessee, and Frank Grindstaff and Jeff Cox of Kingsport; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Bob Crowder of Manassas Park, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Ellen Grindstaff of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Louise Grindstaff of Simi Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren, Alexis and Donnie James, Dimitris "Mimi" Grindstaff, Eric Crowder, Jennifer Grindstaff and Stephanie Grindstaff; nieces and nephews; and special friends, Bonnie and Greg and Billy Shook. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Wellmont Hospice House and Darlene Gibson. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at St. Anne's Catholic Church. The Rev. Timothy Keeney will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard Grindstaff, David Grindstaff, Frank Grindstaff, Mark Grindstaff, Bobby Crowder and Eric Crowder. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Shook, Bob Jones, Dr. Richard W. Foster, Jeff Cox and John Witt. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975.
