Harville Jay Edward Harville, 83, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, after a brief illness at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mr. Harville was born in Thorn Hill, Tenn., on Jan. 19, 1919. He received his formal education in the public schools of Rogersville, Tenn., and East Tennessee State University. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport where he was a member of the church choir for many years. As a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, he served with the Provost Marshall General's Detachment at Fort Custer, Mich. Following his discharge, he was employed the City of Kingsport as assitant city recorder and treasurer. He was the current president of Kingsport Development Co. Insurance, Inc., where he had been an active officer of the company since 1953. Following World War II, he joined the American Legion. He was a member of Hammond Post 3 Color Guard. At the local level, he served his post as finance officer, Second Vice Commander, First Vice Commander and Commander. He served as the Commander of Hammond Post 3 from 1986 through 2001, as well as two other previous terms. During his time as Commander the Post grew to be one of the 25 largest posts in the country. At the state level, he served as East Tennesee Vice Commander and the State Department Commander. Also at that level, he was named both Legionaire of the Year and National Executive Committeeman for the Department of Tennessee. On the national level, he was elected National Vice Commander of the American Legion in 1974 at the 56th Annual National Convention in Miami Beach, Fla. Also on the national level, he was a member of the National Membership and Post Activities Committees for several years. He had also been serving as a member of the National Children and Youth Commission for many years. He was active in youth activities including scouting, Boys State and Dobyns- Bennett athletics. He served as scoutmaster of the scout troop sponsored by his post for seven years and was active in scouting for 32 years. He was responsible for coordinating the East Tennessee entries for the American Legion Boys State Program as well as the Oratorical Program. He served with the Dobyns-Bennett Athletic Department for over 40 years. Mr. Harville was active in his community. He was a past president of the Insurors of Kingsport. He was a charter member of the Kingsport Junior Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce from 1991-1993. He was the Parade Marshall of both the Chamber of Commerce Annual Christmas Parade and the American Legion Fourth of July Parade. He also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Downtown Kingsport Rotary Club. He was appointed as a member of the State Veterans Nusing Home Board by former Governor Ned McWhertor and re-appiointed by Governor Don Sundquist. He served in this capacity from 1989-2001. During this time, he also served as chairman of the Board for one year. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Spivey Harville; a son, Stephen E. Harville and his wife Cynthia; four grandchildren, Joshua, Jordan, Jaron and Alyssa Harville; one brother, Jerome Harville; one sister, Bertie Steigerwald; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Kingsport. The family will also receive friends at the home of Steve and Cynthia Harville, 3 Spring Creek Wynd, Kingsport. Funeral services will be conducted at the church onThursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at 7 p.m. with Pastor Marvin Cameron officiating and the eulogy will be given by Dr. Craig Fry. Music will be provided by David Spears. Graveside services will be Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery with Hammond Psot 3 Color Guard officiating with Chaplain Joe W.Byrd. Pallbearers will be Joseph Harville, Jordan Harville, Dr. Mickey H. Spivey, Rick Spivey and Donald Spivey. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dobyns- Bennett Educational Foundation (Alumni Fieldhouse), c/o Aldebaran Financial, Inc., P.O. Box 6398, Kingsport, TN 37663.
