Hickam Sr. James Jackson Hickam Sr., 86, of Bristol Tennessee, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House after a short illness. Arrangements are incomplete. Hickam James Jackson Hickam, "Jim Jack", 86, at the Wellmont Hospice House on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002. He was born in Lee County, Va., to the late Lavada Rogers Hickam and Andrew Jackson Hickam. His family moved to Bristol in 1928 where he attended school in Bristol Tennessee. Mr. Hickam was a charter member of the Community Church at Bristol and served as an elder for several years. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Civitan Club, "The Coffee Club", and was an associate member of the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Hickam was a member of both the Bristol and Sullivan County Historical Associations, the Bristol YWCA, and worked several years with the Habitat for Humanity. He was a talented wood worker and many people in the area have one of the walking canes that he created. During World War II, Mr. Hickam joined the U.S. Merchant Marines which later became part of the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. Hickam, with his family, enjoyed camping and traveling after his retirement from Time D.C. He and his wife traveled in the United States, Canada and Europe. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Elizabeth Neel Hickam; two daughters, Betty Jo Morton and husband, Ted of Bristol Tennessee, and Virginia Anne Shaver and husband William of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; and one son, James J. Hickam Jr. of Hendersonville, N.C. He is survived by one very special "daughter", Betty Pierce of Bristol Tennessee. He is survived by the following grandchildren, Mark Morton and wife Beth, Bruce Morton, Mary Ann Carver and husband Charles, Thomas Jeffcoat and wife Lori, Elizabeth Gonsalves and husband Garth, Paige Eaton and husband Terry, Mack Morton and wife Karen, Khristin Puckett and husband Walter, Katy Davis and husband Craig, Elizabeth Hickam and Jessica Hickam; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Imogene Fortner and Edna Ruth Horne and husband Hicks, all of Bristol Tennessee; and several cousins and many good friends. A memorial service will be held at the Community Church at Bristol on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. with John Cowell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol TN 37620 or The Community Church at Bristol, 6320 Old Jonesboro Road, Bristol, TN 37620.
