McKenna PINEY FLATS - Lawrence A. McKenna died Friday, March 29, 2003, at Johnson City Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete. Arrangements especially for Mr. McKenna have been made through Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. Bristol Herald Courier Monday, March 31, 2003 Lawrence A. McKenna PINEY FLATS - Lawrence A. McKenna, 72, left this world for a better place on Saturday, March 29, 2003, from Johnson City Medical Center. A son of the late William McKenna and Gertrude Sprunk McKenna, he was a native of Long Beach, N.Y. Mr. McKenna was a long time resident of New Jersey before moving to Piney Flats in 1991. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1952 with a degree in chemistry. He worked in the Performance Plastics Division of Union Carbide, later Amoco Chemical Company from 1957 until his retirement. While with Union Carbide he developed and patented several techniques for molding plastics and led the research team which developed the plastic used in the face mask of Neil Armstrong's helmet for his historic walk on the moon. Mr. McKenna was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Kingsport. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Imogene Lindamood McKenna; two daughters, Eileen Cress of Piney Flats and Kathryn Dietel of Cheyenne, Wyo.; three sons, Lawrence Jr. of Emmitsburg, Md., David of Blountville and Andrew of White House Station, N.J.; one brother, Vincent McKenna of Amityville, N.Y.; one sister, Eileen Sheridan of Coral Gables, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
