Nelson Joe Claude Nelson, 83, 407 Holly Lane, Elizabethton died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of the late James A. and Maggie Sigman Nelson. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was also a retired farmer. Mr. Nelson served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a member of the Boone Dam V.F.W. , Blountville. He was a Past District Commander of the V. F.W., Past Grand Commander of the Military Order of the Cootis. He was a member of the Funeral Detail of the V.F.W. He was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge # 750. Mr. Nelson was preceeded in death by his wife Anna Ruth McKinney Nelson, Sept. 23, 2003, by a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy & Joey Burrow, a granddaughter, Carla Bowers, a grandson-in-law, Chris King and four brothers, William J., Frank, G.D., and Carl Nelson Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol and Raymond Bowers and Sandra and Fred Hyder, all of Elizabethton and Karen Margo Nelson, of the home; one Son, Michael Joe Nelson, Elizabethton; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Richardson, Angela King, Tina and her husband Tim Reece, all of Elizabethton, and Penny and her husband Mitch Stansbery, Johnson City; one grandson and his wife, Chris and Leia Hyder, Dandridge; three great granddaughters, Randi Richardson, Laura and Chrissie King; two great- grandsons, Darris Joseph Reece and Ridge Christopher Hyder; three sisters, Mildred Chambers and her husband Raymond, Elizabethton, Alice Lane, Bluff City and Shelby Hyte and her husband, Marvin, Piney Flats. Several nieces and nephews, and his little dog, Sadie. Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers and military graveside honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Post 2166 where he was a members for many years. Honorary pallbearers will be all the V.F.W. Posts of East Tennessee. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff and volunteers of James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of his daughter, Karen Margo Nelson, 407 Holly Lane, Elizabethton.
