Crenshaw of Bluff City; three granddaughters, Cindy Fankhouser of Bristol Tennessee, Vicki Phillippi of Lexington, Ky., and Stephanie Moore of Bluff City; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Gillespie ABINGDON -- Myrtle Marcum Gillespie, 82, of 320 Bogey Drive, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Wayne County, W.Va., a daughter of the late Wayne and Grace Marcum. She lived most of her life in Grundy before retiring in Abingdon in 1977. She attended Trigg Street Church of God and was the widow of Howard E. Gillespie. Surviving are two sons, Harold E. Gillespie and Robert L. Gillespie, both of Grundy; three daughters, Mary E. Stiltner of Bristol Tennessee, Joann G. Viers of Bristol Virginia and Emma Jean Hess of Grundy; two brothers, Ralph Marcum of Princeton, W.Va., and Willard Marcum of Troutdale, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Hans Hess and Danny Hess will officiate. Entombment will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens Mausoleum. He was employed for 46 years with Island Creek Coal Co. in various capacities, including director of coal preparation for the Virginia division. He retired in 1981. He was born in Atlanta, a son of the late Frank Greer and Mary Irene Burr Lake. He graduated from Davidson College in 1928 and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond in 1931. He studied at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem in 1932, Princeton Theological Seminary in 1955 and the American Summer Institute in St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1970 and 1975. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1931 in Warrenton, Va., and received his doctor of divinity degree from Davidson College in 1945. He was the pastor of Warrenton Presbyterian Church, 1931-38; Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill, S.C., 1938-45; First Presbyterian Church in Bristol Tennessee, 1945-49; First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, 1949-62; Brownson Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, N.C., 1962-68; and Shandon Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C. until his retirement in 1972. Since retirement, he served seven interim pastorates throughout the southeast. He was a life member of the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club. He organized and was the chairman of Bristol and Winston-Salem Preaching missions. He was a member of the board of trustees at Davidson College, St. Andrews College and Union Theological Seminary. Thompson Elinor N. Thompson, 63, of 931 Lewis St., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, in Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in Haley, Tenn. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and a retired dietician for Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the widow of John W. Thompson Sr. Surviving are two sons, John W. Thompson Jr. of Savannah, Ga., and Richard Thompson of Bristol Virginia; three granddaughters, Amie, Ashley and Tori; and two step-grandsons, Greg and Chris. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Redeemer Lutheran Church by Weaver Funeral Home of Bristol, Tenn. The Revs. Glen L. London and Don Paxton will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Danny Thompson. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Among survivors are two daughters-in-law, Kathy Thompson and Joy Thompson. Pallbearers will be nephews.
