He was a lifelong resident of Blountville and a son of the late Floyd and Betty Almaroad. He retired from Paul Baker Chevrolet and was a member of Feather's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ellen Almaroad; a son, Howard Almaroad of Blountville; a daughter, Margaret Witt of Bluff City; six grandchildren, Tim Cross, Aaron Witt, Anna Witt, Angie Federow, Kim Moody and Leslie Almaroad; and three great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Cross, Will Federow and Summer Stanley. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Cross will officiate. Burial will be in Blountville Cemetery. Barker, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, in Francis Marion Manor. He was born in Grayson County, Va., a son of the late Dencil and Beulah Barker. He was an ordained minister and pastored several churches in Smyth and Grayson Counties. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Signal Corps. He was a lifetime member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667, where he served as chaplain for more than 10 years. He retired from Brunswick after 27 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Rachel Barker; a son, Rex S. Barker of Marion; two daughters, Mrs. Gary (Ruth) Blevins of Marion and Mrs. Joe (Nora) Woods of Sugar Grove, Va.; three sisters; 11 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home. The Revs. Tim Williams and Mike Sage will officiate. Clevinger, 72, of the Home Creek section of Route 1, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a son of the late Elder John W. and Mandy Keen Clevinger. He was a member and deacon of Home Creek Old Regular Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 382nd Military Police Battalion in Germany. He was the recipient of the Army Occupational Medal and World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a member of Sandy Vally Lodge 17 AF&AM, I00F Lodge 17 of Grundy and of the American Legion. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union 7025. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Mable McClanahan Clevinger; two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Carolyn) Cammer of Gastonia, N.C., and Mrs. Jerry (Peggy) Thompson of Florence, S.C.; two sons, Wesley Clevinger of Grundy and David Clevinger of Vienna, Va.; six sisters, Alice Coleman of Abingdon, Lou Owens and Jean St. Clair, both of Grundy, Rachel Cochran of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Stella Dales of Franklin, Ohio, and Polly Bateman of Shuqualak, Miss.; a brother, Gilbert Clevinger of Haysi; and four grandsons. Virginia Belle David Virginia Belle David, 77, a former long-time resident of Bristol Tennessee, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born in Appalachia, Va., a daughter of the late Noah and Lisa Fuller. She moved to Bristol in 1947. After being employed with the Kingsport Press, King Printing Co. and Bristol Herald Courier, she received her bachelor's degree and master's degree in English from East Tennessee State University with post-graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was an assistant professor of English at East Tennessee Sate University from 1965-84. She was a past president of the Bristol Chapter of Business and Professional Women's Organization, a member of the American Association of University Women and the national Council of Teachers of English. She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church and the widow of Hugh Walter David. Surviving are two sons, Charles Dishner of Fort Smith and Ernest K. Dishner of Hummelstown, Pa.; three sisters, Betty Moore, Sue Fuller and Pauline Scraper, all of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Davis, who was widely known for her expertise and knowledge of Appalachian folklore, was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Fuller. Janice Marie Denton Janice Marie "Jan" Denton, 24, of 303 Deck Valley Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a daughter of Brenda Booher of Bristol Virginia and Cecil Chapman of Bristol Tennessee. She was a housewife and a graduate of Tennessee High School. She was of the Baptist faith. He was born in Chilhowie, a son of the late Jenny Erps Goodman and John Goodman. He was employed with Chilhowie Milling Co. and Rouse Oil Service for more than 50 years before retiring in 1991. He served as president of the Chilhowie Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of Chilhowie Baptist Church for more than 25 years and was a member of Chilhowie Masonic Lodge 250 AF&AM. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Ruby Baker Goodman; a son, Charles Goodman of Marion, Va.; two grandsons, Jeffrey Christian Goodman of Knoxville and Adam Baker Goodman of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Martin, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, in the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was born in Asberry, Va., a son of the late Issac and Mae Mitchell Martin. He lived in the Damascus area for 52 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired road design engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a stage design and building and ground supervisor for NarroWay Productions, a professional Christian Theater Company in Fort Mill, S.C. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Damascus, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was also a former Sunday school director of the church. Surviving are his wife, Vivian Manuel Martin; three daughters, Teresa Brown of Charlotte, N.C., Debbie Orr of Abingdon and Rebecca Martin of Fort Mill; a son, Phillip Martin of Meadowview; three sisters, Virgie Necessary of Meadowview, Betty Lezzer of Trenton, N.J., and Janie Martin of Lynchburg, Va.; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Montgomery died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at his home. He had lived in Bristol Tennessee before moving to Kingsport in 1960. He was a retired engineer with Tennessee Eastman with 32 years of service and a member of the local Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He was a certified plant engineer and a life member of the Jamestown Society and First Families of Tennessee. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in England with the 8th Air Force. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of the VFW Charles DeWitt Byrd Post 3382 of Kingsport. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Lillian L. Montgomery; a son, Jim Montgomery of Knoxville; a sister, Margaret Kelly of Williamsburg, Va.; a granddaughter, Jenny Montgomery; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Montgomery was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Irvin Montgomery. His hobbies were photography and genealogy. He was loving and devoted to his wife, family and friends. He was a graduate of Tennessee High School in Bristol, received his bachelor of arts degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., and his master of divinity degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He studied at East Tennessee State University, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and Western Carolina University Extension Center in Cherokee, N.C. He became an ordained Southern Baptist minister in 1937 and pastored 15 churches in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia before retiring in 1983. He served as interim pastor of 12 churches after retirement. He spent five years ministering with the Cherokee Indians in Cherokee. He was a two-term moderator of the Holston Baptist Association and a board member of the Baptist State Convention in North Carolina. He was trustee of the Tennessee Baptist Children's Home Inc. and served in many capacities with the Tennessee Baptist Convention. He was the widower of Etta June Hodge Lowe and a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Johnson City. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he served as business manager and treasurer. He was a lay speaker for United Methodist churches and widower of Gerri Arrington Sproles.
