Proffitt PINEY FLATS -- Gale Hamilton Proffitt, 62, loving husband, father, son and brother, died Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the Wellmont Hospice House. He was born March 18, 1941, in Bristol Virginia, grew up in Bristol Tennessee, and attended Bluff City High School, Bristol Community College and East Tennessee State University. He worked at several companies in North Carolina and Roanoke as an accountant. Always an avid sports enthusiast, Gale was responsible for establishing industrial league basketball programs in Roanoke and youth basketball and soccer programs in Clemmons, N.C., and received numerous awards for his efforts. Gale returned to Bristol in 1982 and served as president and co-owner of Tri-City Auto Parts Inc. for the past 21 years. He attended First Christian Church of Johnson City, Tenn. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shelby Hutcherson Proffitt, formerly of Eden, N.C.; two sons, Shawn Hamilton Proffitt of Charlotte, N.C., and Jonathan Kelly Proffitt of Knoxville; his mother, Maultie Proffitt of Piney Flats; his brother, Darrell Proffitt and his wife Linda of Piney Flats; his mother-in-law, Ruth Hutcherson of Eden; his brothers-in-law, Garland Hutcherson and his wife Carrie; Mike Hutcherson and Donnie Hutcherson all of Eden; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a godson, Trace Andrews of Abbeville, S.C. He was preceded in death by his father, Nila H. Proffitt; and his brother, Allen Keith Proffitt. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 Saturday evening at Oakley- Cook Funeral Home. The funeral service will be conducted at 8 o'clock in the Paul Cook Memorial Chapel with Mr. Bob Robinson and Mr. Paul Peer officiating. The committal service will be at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Heritage Chapel of Memories in Glenwood Cemetery with entombment to follow.
