Smalling ABINGDON -- Mrs. Zelma Witt Smalling died suddenly early Friday morning at Bristol Nursing Home following a small stroke complicated by an Alzheimer's- like dementia. She was 89. Mrs. Smalling's career in fashion merchandising took her first from the family home in Lynchburg, then to Bristol in the late 1930's, where she met her future husband, George Smalling. The two were married in 1944, after the future Mrs. Smalling had become reacquainted with Mr. Smalling in World War II in Shreveport, La. She was a fashion model and he a celestial navigator specializing in P-38 aircraft for the Army Air Corps. The Smallings returned to the Mountain Empire in 1965, when George Smalling accepted a professorship at Emory & Henry College, until his retirement in 1981 and death in 1986. Mrs. Smalling moved to Abindgon in 1989. Until her confinement for dementia five years ago, Zelma Smalling had supported a wide number of charities and civic causes, including the Emory and Abingdon United Methodist churches, the American Cancer Society and the Virginia Federation of Women' Clubs, on which she served as president. She is survived by one sister, Mabel Witt Dove of Lynchburg; and one son, Allen Smalling of Chicago. The family will receive friends Sudnay afternoon from 3-5 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mausoluem Chapel of Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol Tennessee. Rev. Bill Rowland will officiate. The funeral procession will assemble Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Smalling had requested that donations be made to Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E.
