SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Nelson St. John, 27 Aug 2004 ----¤¤¤---- Nelson St. John, age 86, Pine Oaks Nursing Center, formerly of 1565 Tiger Creek, Roan Mountain, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Bristol, he was the son of the late Nathan "Papa John" and Georgia Pearl Nelson "Mama" St. John. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbie Ryan, a granddaughter, Sherri Ellen Ryan, and two sisters, Virginia Holloman and Ellen Farina. Mr. St. John was a graduate of Appalachia High School, Appalachia Va. He attended Milligan College for two years and received a bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Virginia and a masters degree in accounting from Columbia University, New York City. He served on the board of the Carter County Conservation Farmers until 1986. Mr. St. John was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and a former CPA, retiring in 1980. He became a cattle and Christmas tree farmer, beekeeper and maple syrup producer and enjoyed wood carving, gardening and reading. He loved God, his family, his country and his farm. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Barrett St. John; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Don St. John, Huntsville, Ala., and Jim and Marja St. John, Oakland, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and James Smith, Forth Worth, Texas and Ruth Ann and Doug Lindauer, Roan Mountain; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Getsi, Oak Ridge; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside service and inurnment will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 5, in the Captain Nelson Cemetery, Ripshin Mountain.The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, September 4, in the Garden Room of Tetrick Funeral Home and also following the service at the cemetery.Those who prefer, in lieu of flowers, may make memorial donations to Memorial Presbyterian Church, 100 East F Street, Elizabethton, or Milligan College, Milligan College, TN 37682.
