Thompson KINGSPORT -- Dr. John Guthrie Thompson died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002. "Previous in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalm 116:15. John was born in Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil, in 1941. He received a bachelor of science from Davis & Elkins College and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Delaware. He has worked since 1968 as a polymer chemist with Eastman Chemical Company where he attained the distinction of Technology Fellow. He was a ruling elder at Bridwell Heights Presbyterian Church. John was preceded in death by his father, Franklin MacCown Thompson; and mother, Ruth Gueiros Thompson. John is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ellen (Mensinger) Thompson; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Philip Greninger and their children, Andrew, Kate, Molly and John of Atlanta; son and daughter-in-law, Nathan and Jennifer Thompson and their children, Gabriel, Emily, Garrett and Elinor of Chicago; son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Francesca Thompson and their son, Knox of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and daughter, Lydia Thompson of Chattanooga. He is also survived by his three sisters and their husbands and families, Ruth and Mel Chase, Nancy Cain and Jonathan, Agnes and Jim Barkley, Paige and Amanda, Mary Susan and Bill Orester, Gloria and Barbara. In lieu of flowers, any gifts may be sent to the Christian Education Fund, Bethany Christian Services Fund or Abortion Alternative Christian Services Fund, c/o Bridwell Heights Presbyterian Church, 5101 Memorial Blvd., Kingsport, TN 37664.
