Am of lawful age and daughter of Joshua Wyatt deceased. I have heard him say that he had received $50 from Jas King for the use of Lee Perdue's wife. He was the reputed father. She was about four years old when my father got the money. It was about forty odd years when he first rec'd the money. My understanding that the money was to be put in the hands of John King and Joshua Wyatt to be kept for her use until she became of age. Benson came and got the money. He came several times and my father did not have it by him and told him to go to John King and get it. And with his consent King let him have the money. Benson was in debt and my father refused for a long time to let him have it for fear that she would never get the benefit of it. Benson wanted it to pay his debts with and at last he consented that he should have it and it went I think to pay for some land. I always understood that the amt of the money to have been $50. I have heard my father often say that that was the amt he was to see paid her. I heard my father speak of the matter for the last time, about 2 years before his death. He never took any bond or note from Benson for the money and complainants were to look to him for the money and he to Benson for it. I have heard him say witnin two years before his death that the money was her just rights and that he would see that she should be paid have often heard him say that if Lee Perdue was a smart man he could make the money off of him. Cross Exam by George W. Allen The money was paid to Benson before my father left North Carolina when Benson and wife came for the money she contended that she was entitled to the money for the purposes of supporting the child. She called for and demanded the money. She kept the child until she was married which was when she was about 22 years of age. Lee Perdue's wife knew of the money being in my father's hands before she married. Have often heard her talk of it. James King visited my father and Lee Perdue's wife a good many years after the money was paid to my father. He died in Goose Creek in this county while on a visit my father has been living near Lee Perdue's wife ever since she came from North Carolina and also in North Carolina up to the time of his death. He was always good for that amount of money. I would not be more than willing to take a child at 4 years of age and raise it for $25 or $30 for years until it reached 10 years of age after that time next to 22 years I do not know whether her board or raising was worth more than her labor it might or might not. Re exam by Colonel Guild She was a very industrious working girl while living with Benson she did house work of all kinds and worked in the farm at busy times and was expected that she worked also in the distillery. I think that her services from the time of 4 years of age until she was 22 worth her raising. She wove not only for the family but provided to her provisions for them all. And further defendent saith not. Sarah (her X mark) Barber.
