D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a Justice of Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid Mary Cochran aged 58 years, a resident of Sumner County in the State of Tennessee, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Daniel Cochran deceased who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Eli Ferguson in the (-----) Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Cas(-----) in the War of 1812 with Great Britain. That her said husband enlisted at Franklin County, Virginia on or about the ---- day of September A.D. 1814 for the term of 6 months and continued in actual serice in said war for the term of over fifteen days and was honorably discharged at Norfolk on the -----day of ----- A. D. 1815. She further states that she was married to the said Daniel Cochran in Franklin County, Virginia on the 22 day of September A.D. 1812 by one Joel Ashworth a Minister of the Gospel and that her name before her said marriage was Mary Brizendine that her said husband died in Sumner County on the 9 January A. D. of 1837 and that she is a widow at the date of executing this her declaration. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which she may be entitled under act approved March 3, 1855. She also declares that she has never received nor applied for Bounty Land under this or any other act of Congress. She never had a Warrant and has never applied before and her husband never received one. Mary Cochran Sworn to and subscibed before me the day and year above written and I certify that I believe the claimant to be the identical person she represents herself to be and that I have no interest in said claim. State of Tennessee} County of Sumner } On this 17th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five personally appeared before me a Justice of Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid Reason T. Mattox and Mary Mattox residents of the State of Tennessee and County of Sumner who being duly sworn according to law declare that they are personally and well acquainted with Mrs. Mary Cochran who saw her sign her name to the foregoing declaration that they knew her to be the identical person therein represented and that she is now a widow; and they swear they are disinterested witnesses. Further states she and the late Daniel Cochran lived together for many years as man and wife up to his death and had children and all regarded them as man and wife in legaly married they further state that he died as has been stated on the 9 day of January 1837 and she has remained a widow ever since and they state further more that they are disinterested. Sworn and so ordered to before me a justice of the peace and I certify that they are disinterested witnesses and I am disinterested in this claim. R. C. Brizendine J.P. Reason T. Brizendine Esq whose name appears to the foregoing declaration and affadavits is and was at the time of signing the same an acting Justice of the Peace in and for said county duly commissioned and qualified as such and that his said signature is genuine. Witness my hand and seal of Office at Office in Gallatin, Tennessee this 2nd day May 1855 John L. Bugg clerk, State of Tennessee} Sumner County } On this the 29th day of July in year 1856 personally appeared before me Richard C. Brizendine acting Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Sumner and State aforesaid Mathew Perdue & Hale Perdue two respectful and (---?) witnesses resident citzens of Sumner County and State upon oath that they live in the miadet(immediate) nabuhood (neighborhood) of Daniel Cochran in his life time and they new him well for many years previous to his death and he died in Sumner County Tennessee in the year 1837 and on the 9 day of January and they would state that this is the only application that has been made by Mrs. Mary Cochran and they are vary certain that she never received any land warrant and they are no wise interested in the application and she is the person she refers to herself to be. State of Tennessee} Sumner County} On this the 29th of July in year 1856 personally appeared before me Mary Cochran to me well known and makes oathe in due form of law the she had made no application for land boundy under no act of Congress except the act of the 3 of March 1855 nor received no land warrant wrote ever. Sworn and Sealed to. Mary Cochran (seal) Subscired & Sworn to before me this 29 July 1856 and I am disinterested in this application. R. C. Brizendine J.P. State of Tennessee Sumner County On this day Mary Cochran signed this in our presents & we acknowledged the same and we are disinterested in this application. Bugg clerk Additional Comments: Daniel Cochran was born 7 July 1793 in Franklin Co., VA to Samuel Cochran & Sarah Northcutt. He married Mary Brizendine in Franklin Co., VA 1 Sept 1817. Mary was born 5 March 1797 in Franklin Co., VA to Leroy Brizendine & Lucy Barnes. She died 29 Oct 1873 and was buried along with her husband Daniel Cochran in Shanklin Cemetery (formerly Cochran/Barber Cemetery) in Sumner Co., TN.
