Raymond Whitson 33 years old farmer and oil contractor of Sumner County, Tennessee was shot and instantly killed in the corridor of the Court House here Monday afternoon by Robert Davidson, 38, son of Jailor Charles L. Davidson. Whitson, who came here to attend the trial of a relative on a charge of breach of peace was standing talking to Davidson it is said when the killer fired at him. Chief of Police Aspley chance to be at the upper end of the corridor but approached the men just as the revolver flashed. He at once siezed the weapon and placed Davidson under arrest. In common with all citizens who look to the law for protection, The Favorite deeply deplores this additional stain upon the good name of Simpson county. Having never in life heard of the dead man, we of course know nothing of him except statements attributed to friends and neighbors since his death, and without exception they declared him to be an industrous frugal and trustworthy man. he is said to have owned about 80 acres of good land and was accepted by Portland business men as a reliable and (---?) able farmer. The examining trial was called at 11 o'clock Wednesday, but continued until Tuesday at next (unreadable?).
