I only know that Grandpa Shoaf would have been living in Tipton County at the time. His name was John Shoaf but story goes that the 'A' was added during the Civil War because there was another John Shoaf in his unit. The other John Shoaf was given a B'. Additional Comments: John 'A' Shoaf was the 1st of William and Mary Hedrick Shoaf's children to come to West TN from Davidson County, NC after the Civil War. John served with General Robert E Lee in the VA. Campaign and was taken as prisoner of war at Petersburg. He and his wife, Sallie Harris, lived on a farm north of Covington. They had 9 children.
