She was a native of Yancey County, North Carolina, but had lived most of her life in Unicoi County. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Ann Gouge Byrd. Mrs. Bailey was a memeber of Clear Branch Baptist Church. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John L. Byrd, Senior; and by one sister, Pearl B. Simmons. Survivors include: Two osns, Jack Bailey, Eastman, Georgia and Warren L. "Chuck" Bailey, Erwin; three daughters, Helen Edwards, Erwin, Pauline B. Shelton, Anderson, Indiana, and Leota Letterman, Telford; five grandchildren, Ronald Paul Bailey, New York, Steven Letterman, Granville, Anna Marie Bryant, Cookeville, Janet Letterman, Telford, and Tammy Tipton, Erwin; seven step-grandchildren, Donna Garnto, Steve Garnto, Doug Garnto, Flora Kaye Shelton, Gaye Church, John Mark Harris and Jeffery Richardson; several nieces and nephews; and a host of honorary family members. Mrs. Bailey is interred in Byrd Cemetery, Burnsville, North Carolina.
