McLaughlin Richard E. McLaughlin, 85, 311 Scott Road, Unicoi, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. McLaughlin was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Bob and Alta Helmick McLaughlin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter McLaughlin, Ray McLaughlin and Bobby Jack McLaughlin, and three sisters, Anna Sachs, Mayme Carmichael and Vennie Duckworth. Mr. McLaughlin was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having served with "M" Company 35th Infantry Division. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the American Defense Service Ribbon. He was a member of Unicoi Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Joel and Beverly McLaughlin, Tracy and Joyce McLaughlin and Rev. Todd and Amy McLaughlin, all of Unicoi, and Kevin and Stevie McLaughlin, Elizabethton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Harold and Nell McLaughlin, Unicoi, and Don McLaughlin, Orange County, Calif.; a sister, Edna Gallagher, Orange County, Calif.; two grandchildren, Ashley McLaughlin and Alyssa McLaughlin, both of Unicoi; and three step-grandchildren, Cody Bowling and Cory Bowling, both of Elizabethton, and Rachael Hendricks, Erwin, Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. Funeral services for Mr. McLaughlin will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, September 22, from the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Todd McLaughlin and Rev. Thurman Sullivan officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Family members will serve as active pallbearers. Jim Britt and D.H. Garland will serve as honorary pallbearers. Committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, September 23, at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Full military grave rites will be rendered by the Tennessee Army National Guard and American Legion Post #3265. Family, ministers, pallbearers and friends are requested to assemble at the funeral home by 9:15 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
