Mrs. Sawyer was a native of Limestone and a daughter of the late Thomas Elliott, Senoir and Glenna Hall Goodin. A graduate of Science Hill High School, she attended East Tennessee State Normal School and graduated from American College, Chicago. She lived in Maynard, Mass. until September 1942, when she moved back to Erwin. Mrs. Sawyer taught school in the Kingsport, Washington County, and Unicoi County school systems for 30 years until her retirement, and thereafter worked as a substitute teacher for 20 years. She was a memeber of the Teacher's Retirement Associaiton, Southern Dames, the Erwin Unaka Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Magdalene Chapter, Maynard, Illinois, GFWC, Erwin Monday Club and Gamma Delta Chapter of Kappa Delta sorority, ETSU. Mrs. Sawyer was also a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. She was precede in death by her husband, Reginald P. Sawyer in December 1968. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Glenna Sawyer and Curtis P. Riley, Sr.; one brother, John Goodin, Johnson City; three grandchildren, Ellen R. Sewell, Erwin, Curtis R. Riley, Jr. and Glenna L. Riley, both of Mobile, Alabama; four great-grandchildren, Christopher Sewall, Justin Riley, Jennifer Riley and Jessica Riley; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sawyer is interred at Urbana Cemetery, Limestone.
