UNICOI COUNTY, TN - OBITUARIES - Nathaniel T. Tucker ----¤¤¤---- Mr. N. T. Tucker, 76, Clerk and Master here for the past twenty years, and one of the county's most prominent citizens, died at the American Legion Hospital here last Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. Carl S. Miller officiating, assisted by Rev. S. O. Redacre. Mr. Tucker was a member of the county's pioneer families and has been prominent in civic circles for many years. He served as Mayor of Erwin, County Chairman, and Chairman of the Board of Education and held other official offices. He was a thirty -second degree Mason and a Shiner. Mr. Tucker was born in Unicoi County, March 27, 1861, the son of Joseph Sevier and Allie McGumpsey Tucker. He was elected a Justice of Peace from the 5th District at the age of 21 and was elected Chairman of the County Court the same year, holding this office for several terms. He was married to Nora Sarah O'Brien in 1899. He served as Mayor of Erwin for about ten years and as Chairman of the Executive Committee of Unicoi County and was also Chairman of the Republican Congressional Committee of the First District of Tennessee. Mr. Tucker served as Chairman of the Unicoi County Board of Education for 14 years and served as Clerk and Master for more than 30 years. During the time that Mr. Tucker served as Chairman of the County Court he was instrumental in the improvement of the educational facilities of the county, and in the erection of many modern school buildings. During the time that he was Mayor, he was largely responsible for the erection of the Love Street School, the first modern school building in the city. He was always very much interested in schools and roads. During his term as Mayor the first paved streets and sidewalks were built here as well as many of the modern business and dwelling houses in Erwin. He was one of the organizers and the first President of the Erwin National Bank. Mr. Tucker was nominated for State Senator in 1914 but declined the nomination. All of Mr. Tucker's children and grandchildren were present at the funeral. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. N. T. Tucker, five daughters, Mrs. E. W. Sparks of Erwin, Mrs. Roy Hickey, Jr., of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Sam Grumney of Hampton, Miss Maude Tucker and Mrs. J. C. Sugg of Erwin, two sons, Dana H. Tucker of Brentwood, Md., and DeWitt Tucker of Erwin, one sister, Mrs. Nora Jones of Washington, D.C. and seven grand children. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
