What is your full name and where do you reside? (Give State, County, and Post Office) Susan Perry, McMinnville, Warren Co., Tennessee. 2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State? All my life. 3. When and where were you born and what was your maiden name? Born in 1841 in Warren County, Tenn., maiden name Susan Cantrell. 4. When and where was your husband born-state his full name, and when and where were you and he married, and who performed the marriage ceremony? (Attach certified copy marriage license in every case) Joel Perry was born in 1831, in North Carolina; we were married in November 1867, by Esq. Billy O. Smith. 5. When and where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? Enlisted in Donalds Co., 16 Tenn., in Warren Co., when regiment was first organized. 6. How long did you husband serve in said Company and Regiment? For four years. 7. When and where did your husband’s Company and Regiment surrender? Don't know. 8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his Company and Regiment surrendered? Do not know. 9. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was when he left command, for what cause and by what authority? I don not know of my own knowledge, as I did not know him before the war. We were not married until after the war. 10. When and where did your husband die? Died 1898, in Warren Co. 11. At the time of your husband’s death, were you living with him as his lawful wife? Yes 12. How many children did you have by your said husband? Give sex and age at this time. five, 3 girls, 2 boys, ages 36 - 34 - 30 - 28 - 25. 13. What property, real or personal, or income do you have or possess, and its gross value. Nothing in [world?] 14. What property, real or personal, did you possess at death of husband or did he leave you, and what disposition if any, by sale or gift have you made of the same? left cow and horse, a few [hogs?] and tools, and have used them for support as best I could till now. 15. What is your name and what is your post office address? E. S. Rowan, McMinnville, Tenn. 2. Are you acquainted with the applicant Mrs. Perry If so, how long have you known her? No, I know he was married but did not know his wife. 3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this State? 4. When and where was she born? 5. Were you ever acquainted with her husband? Yes 6. When and by whom were they married? Do not know. 7. When and where was he born? Do not know, think he would have been 70 years now. 8. How long did you know him? From time he joined army. 9. When and where did Joel Perry enlist in the war between the States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? 1861, May 28, at McMinnville - Co. "C", 16th Tenn. I enlisted at same time. 10. Were you a member of the same Company and Regiment at the close of the war? Yes. 11. How long did he perform regular military duty? Till close of war. 12. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered? Apr. 1865, at Greensboro, N. C. 13. Were you with the command when it surrendered? Yes. 14. Was Joel Perry the husband of applicant present? Yes. 15. If not present where was he? 16. When and where did he leave his command? at close of war For what cause? Surrendered at close of war. By whose authority did he leave? How do you know all this? (State fully and clearly) I have just stated that I was a member of same company and regiment and knew Perry. 17. When and where did Joel Perry die? Saw notice of his death a few years ago. Don't remember exact date. 18. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Tennessee at his death? Resided in Warren County, where he has lived at least since 1861. 19. Do you know of your own knowledge that applicant is the lawful widow of Joel Perry? Don't know. I know he was a married man and have no reason to think the applicant was not. 20. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband’s death, and is she now a widow? Don't know. Husband was a poor man with practically nothing. 21. What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you know this of your own knowledge? Don't know. 22. Has applicant conveyed any property in the last two years or given any away, if so, what was it and to whom? Don't know. Note--Let the witness who can answer the greatest number of the questions do so; then let the other witness state in the space below how much of the testimony of the first witness he concurs in, and whether or not he can answer any of the questions not answered by the first witness. Biles [stating?] think Joel Perry enlisted in May 1861 in Co C 16th Tenn Regt and made a good soldier and was with the company July 22nd 1864 in battle at Atlanta Ga [Assume?] was badly wounded in [same?] battle and never saw the Regt any more during the war. When and where and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the war between the States? In May 1861 - McMinnville Tenn Co "C" 16 Tenn Regt. 6. How long did you husband serve in said Company and Regiment? Three & one half years. 7. When and where did your husband’s Company and Regiment surrender? At Greensburough, N. C. April 1865 8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his Company and Regiment surrendered? No 9. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where he was when he left command, for what cause and by what authority? I don't know only what my husband told me - he said he was off on detail, and was cut off at the Battle of Nashville and was told to take care of himself. 10. Was your husband a pensioner or an applicant for pension, under the laws of Tennessee? no 11. Have you heretofore applied for a pension in this State? yes 12. When and where did your husband die? in Warren Co. - 19 November 1899 13. At the time of your husband’s death, were you living with him as his lawful wife? I was 14. One poor track of land of [40 or 160] Acres one horse and cow Land was 180 dollars and the cow and horse one hundred - and had to sell it to live on and to pay debts and funeral expenses. 18. Where either or both of you present at the marriage? I was not 8. How long did you know him? I knew him 50 yrs or more 9. When and where did Joel Perry enlist in the war between the States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this? In May 1861 at McMinnville Tenn Company "C" Captain Donnell Commanding Company 16th Tenn Regiment 10. Were you a member of the same Company and Regiment at the close of the war? I was a member of the same Regiment and possibly of the same Co after Consolidation 11. How long did he perform regular military duty? From 1861 until after the battle of Nashville. He was a faithful soldier during this entire period, after this battle I did not know much of him. 12. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered? April 1865 at Greensboro N. C. 13. Were you with the command when it surrendered? I was not 14. Was Joel Perry, the husband of applicant, present? He was not 15. If not present where was he? At home having been cut off not being able to get to his command after making several attempts 16. When and where did he leave his command? For what cause? My notion is the command left him near Nashville By whose authority did he leave? How do you know all this? (State fully and clearly) By being a comrade with him through this entire period 17. When and where did Joel Perry die? In 1899 in Warren County Tenn 18. Where did he reside at his death and how long had he been a resident of Tennessee at his death? He resided in Warren Co Tenn Came from N. C. when a boy 19. Do you know of your own knowledge that applicant is the lawful widow of Joel Perry? I do 20. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband’s death, and is she now a widow? Yes 21. What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you know this of your own knowledge? She has no income by being a neighbor to her and knowing her condition Has applicant conveyed any property in the last two years or given any away, if so, what was it, and to whom? She has not had any property to transfer in the last 2 yrs. sometime previous to this she was compelled to sell her little place to pay her husbands debts. Note--Let the witness who can answer the greatest number of the questions do so; then let the other witness state in the space below how much of the testimony of the first witness he concurs in, and whether or not he can answer any of the questions not answered by the first witness. F. G. Womack concurs in all the material questions asked J. J. Martin, also he concurs in what his wife stated with reference to being cut off and not being able to get to his command telling me this immediately after their surrender Mr. Womack states that Mr. Perry told him in the conversation referred to below that after being told by his commanding officer to take care of themselves, that they were scattered and he never knew where he was until he got to Lavergne, from which place he came home. The records of this office show that Joel Perry, private, Company F, afterwards Company C, 16th Tennessee Infantry, C. S. A., enlisted May 28, 1861, at McMinnville, to serve 12 months. He is reported on the roll for March and April, 1864, last on file, as present. There are no rolls of the 1st Consolidated Tennessee Regiment, C. S. A., on file. Prisoners of war records show that he deserted December 20, 1864, and that he signed an oath of allegiance January 20, 1865, at Nashville, Ten- nessee. F. C.
